Customer Review: Great comprehensive book on nutrition.
This is exactly the book I’ve been looking for! Objective, to-the-point facts on nutrition, vitamins, eating habits, and other topics such as preservatives, toxins, etc. I’ve seen too many “fad” nutritional books that are biased toward either vegan/vegetarian, low carb, low fat, high fat-low carb, etc. This book seems to be objective enough to allow the readers to decide on their own what diet path to take. This book, a good diet, and exercise can stand on their own and I feel this book can last a long time as a good reference book. Personally, I prefer a well-rounded diet (including some red meat), chicken, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts. I lean toward organic or natural foods. Should readers decide to focus on another particular diet, they can supplement this book with one that follows their philosophy. I highly recommend this book as a stand alone or as a starting point to other diets.

Customer Review: all in one

Physical Activity And Health
Sedentary habits have been identified as a major public health problem in many countries. The timely Physical Activity and Health addresses an unmet need by providing a comprehensive treatment of the relationship between physical activity and health outcomes.

Physical Activity and Health is the first textbook to bring together the results of the most important studies in this rapidly changing field and offers a detailed yet concise and clear presentation of key concepts. The text provides a conceptual framework to help readers relate results from single studies or collections of studies to the overall paradigm linking physical activity and physical fitness to health.

Written by Claude Bouchard and other leading scientists from around the world, this richly illustrated textbook offers information unmatched in accuracy and reliability. Where other books have simply promoted physical activity for the individual or a population, this book completely integrates and examines the relationship between physical activity and health by

providing a history of physical activity, including how levels of physical activity have changed over time and how this has affected the overall health of society;

highlighting the differences in the effects of physical activity on fitness across age, gender, and ethnic groups;

describing how various systems of the human body respond to physical activity;

illustrating the relationship between physical activity and health concerns such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, and mental health;

offering guidance for determining the proper amount and type of exercise to be undertaken; and

suggesting new directions for research in this growing and changing field.

The text explains the latest advances in understanding the effects of acute and chronic participation in physical activity and reviews the relationships between regular physical activity and health outcomes, including cardiovascular morbidities, mental health, and all-cause mortality. It also focuses on the prevention of diseases, quality of life, and well-being.

The textbook offers the following features:

Chapter outlines that provide a user-friendly, conceptual framework

Key concepts, definitions, and study questions that simplify the review process

179 illustrations, 54 tables, and 51 photographs that clarify the text and emphasize key concepts

Physical Activity and Health is organized into five parts. Part I defines the basic concepts, traces the history of the field, and summarizes evidence accumulated on the relationship between levels of physical activity and fitness and variations with age, between genders, and among ethnic groups. Part II describes the latest advances in understanding the effects of acute and chronic participation in physical activity. Part III reviews the relationships between regular physical activity and health outcomes—including cardiovascular morbidities, mental health, and all-cause mortality—and the levels of fitness and the same health outcomes. Part IV focuses on the “how” and deals with dose-response issues and types of exercise programs. Part V explores how advances in genetics challenge our understanding of the complex relationships between physical activity, fitness, and health. It offers a practical integration of all the issues discussed in the preceding chapters.

Some of the finest scientists in the field from the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia collaborated on this comprehensive resource. Readers can feel confident that they are receiving the most accurate information currently available on physical activity and health in any textbook.

Customer Review: I trained in this program and it helped tremendously
This book started the Self-Management approach to chronic illness. I trained in the Self-Management program and have led groups for years, and have seen people make wonderful changes. This experience and knowledge inspired me to write my book, The Art of Getting Well. Drs Lorig, Holman, Sobel and the other authors lay out all you need to know to develop your programs of exercise, relaxation, emotional support, and healthy eating. They also teach how to deal successfully with medical systems and treatments. The book stresses living the best possible life, not just following medical orders or watching everything you eat. It’s an excellent complement to my book, which will provide some inspiration to attempt the behavior changes that “Living a Healthy Life” explains so well.
Customer Review: Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions…
This book does an excellent job of presenting how chronic illness patients are overwhelmed and how they can aggressively confront the debilitating cycle and successfully manage the lifestyles they must lead. Everyone with a chronic illness is forced to live differently than all others, no matter their age. The book analyzes and describes the depleting cycle that anyone with a chronic, dibilitating illness encounters, and offers proven solutions on how to break the debilitating cycle and progress outward inspite of the illness.

A Teen’s Guide to Going Vegetarian

Customer Review: Good introduction for those new to vegetarianism
I first read this in junior high, when I tried being a vegetarian the first time. I loved it and I learned a lot from it. When I returned to vegetarianism as a young adult, I read it again. Although I’m not a teenager anymore, I feel the book is still a handy guide for making the difficult transition to being a vegetarian a lot easier. When people question the food you eat or don’t eat and challenge your beliefs on the subject, it can be hard — this book offers advice for what to do and say in all sort of situations, educates you on nutrition, and gives you basic ideas for meals. “A Teen’s Guide to Going Vegetarian” doesn’t assume you have a lot of money, time, or resources for food shopping and meal preparation (as teenagers and adults alike usually don’t), so it’s great for anyone who needs to be frugal or doesn’t have a lot of time to search for unusual ingredients. But it does introduce you to foods you might not of heard of or tried before, which is important.
Customer Review: This is a must-have for teen vegetarians
I have been a vegetarian for almost two years but I had never really read any books about it. Before I buy something, I always read the reviews, and this book had such good reviews. It is so helpful and fun to read. It has a lot of information such as what they really do to animals at slaughterhouses. It is really sad and it made me become a vegan, but it is necessary that aspiring vegetarians/vegans are aware of it. In every chapter, it has things that you can do to help. It also gives the titles of other books that you can read to find out more. I would definetely reccomend this book to anyone who wants to be a vegetarian or who already is one.
