Customer Review: Dangerous Man, Don’t waste your money!
If you’ve ever heard Gary Null on the radio, you would know that he espouses beliefs about AIDS, anti-depressive meds, mercury fillings, etc. which are so out there that I find it unbelievable that this man has an audience anywhere. Don’t waste your time or your money on this book!

Customer Review: stupid waste of money
the book isn’t that good; get the Doctor’s Book of Home remedies Instead. The information is vague, and the index is set up for herbs instead of ailments. Isn’t the book supposed to tell you which herbs fix which ailments? not easy to look things up.

Customer Review: Secrets of the Sacred White Buffalo
For anyone who is interested in the use of healing herbs by Native Americans, or who is interested in herbs in general, this is the wrong book to read. It’s full of misinformation of every kind, so much so that one wonders if the author’s informants were pulling his leg. Plant misidentification, spelling errors, incorrect herbal information…it’s all there. As a herbalist, my advice is that no one should use this book as a guide!
Customer Review: Fascinating Reading!
I found this book to be fascinating reading. It contains extremely interesting information about the Native American cultures & their uses of herbs. In this day and age when so many people are turning to alternative medicine I think anyone wishing to broaden their knowledge of herbs & their uses would not be disappointed in this book. The recipe section gives great uses for herbs in the kitchen. Also, if you want to look up an ailment & find the herbal remedy for it, it’s right there. I found this to be an excellent book.

A Thinking Person’s Step by Step Guide to Weight Loss & Exercise Program

A Thinking Person’s Step by Step Guide to Weight Loss & Exercise Program
This book presents a groundbreaking approach to keeping up with weight loss and exercise plans. The method described - and shown to work based on empirical results - is radically different from traditional methods that single-mindedly emphasize personal motivation. Instead of promoting the establishment of overly ambitious goals, the selection of diet or workout “buddies,” and the pairing of idealized outcomes with guilt trips as an ultimately destructive carrot - stick combination, the book sets out effectively to demolish these common and frequently toxic approaches. In a calmly reasoned, analytical way, the authors identify decisive elements in each person’s environment and show how seemingly small changes in our surroundings and habits lead to lasting results.

Among the many innovative angles presented in the book are recordkeeping tools that bring out patterns hidden in our lifestyles and help us distinguish between real improvement and insignificant blips. After walking the reader through the steps of their unique strategy, the authors offer a full case study that brings the facts and figures to life. The book closes with a discussion on the pitfalls of the self-improvement movement when taken to unhealthy extremes and reiterates the sensible approach that defines its entire content.

Customer Review: New Approach Helpful !
I really enjoyed reading this book and found it refreshingly helpful. It provided an approach to dieting and exercise that I had not thought about before. I liked that a “system approach” was examined to meet the challenge of changing one’s lifestyle as well as an emphasis on team work for succcess. I took the suggestion of tracking my progress and that proved to be informative as well. This is so much better than individual motivation and guilt that are used in most diet and exercise books!

Customer Review: Treating the behavioral aspects of diabetes
This book consists of chapters written by a variety of authors. They address common emotional, family and behavioral problems that one might encounter when treating inviduals with diabetes. There sections relevant to the very young as well as the elderly. I liked the sections on dealing with hypoglycemia. They did a good job of addressing how fear of hypoglycemia can influence behavior. Most of the psychological principles are still quite relevant and valuable. Some of the specific suggestions for diet and insulin management are out of date, because of the introduction of ultra-rapid insulin and because of the increase in the use of the insulin pump. I would enjoy seeing an updated version. Dr. Cox could then incorporate driving data into his sections on hypoglycemia.

Quick Check Food Facts

Quick Check Food Facts
Expanded and updated, this pocket-size book is a reliable guide to healthful eating for weight watchers, cholesterol watchers, and everybody else who wants to stay fit. Authoritative charts compiled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture list the nutrient values of every food type—vegetables, fruits, cereal grains, pasta, dairy and egg products, fats and oils, meats and fish, poultry, baked products, soups and sauces, beverages, snacks and sweets, and processed food combinations. The charts list: Total calories * Calories from fat proteins * Carbohydrates * Sodium * Cholesterol * and Fiber. Here is a guide to good health that is easy to understand, filled with facts, and small enough to take along on travels and to restaurants.

Customer Review: Useful tool for weight watching
I bought an earlier edition of this book in 1999 and have gotten a lot of use from it. I initially used it for calorie counting (I lost the 35 pounds I needed to lose and have kept it off), and when I turned vegetarian I was able to look up protein amounts to make sure I was getting adequate nutrition.

The lists break down foods by the amounts of Calories, Fat Calories, Protein, Fat, Cholesterol, Sodium and Fiber in each serving. An item such as an apple will get multiple listings: 1cup, slices: canned, sweetened, sliced. drained, unheated; 1cup, slices: raw, with skin; 1 cup, slices: raw, without skin, cooked, boiled, and two other listings for apples because the nutrients vary according to the way the things are prepared.

Sometimes the amounts are hard to figure (Tofu, 1 piece, 13 g) and I have to do a little arithmetic or consult an online source for an easier way to measure the food. Overall, though, I’ve found it to be fairly comprehensive (the newer edition may be more so), and the counts jibe with other sources.

For foods that don’t already have nutrition labels on packaging — fresh vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, and so on — this guide is handy to have around the kitchen, saving trips to the computer to find out how calorific some food might be. (If I were a complete health nut I’d also be watching my sodium and fat intake, but being mostly vegan, that’s probably unnecessary.)

Most people don’t seem to have the anal determination to calorie count, or the curiosity to find out if their nutritive requirements are being met, but if you are concerned or curious about your health in regard to the foods you eat, this is a helpful guide for the basics.

An ideal book of this type would also list minerals and vitamins per food item. I have to check other sources to make sure I’m getting enough calcium and iron, for instance. But I still use this book almost daily to check calorie amounts.

Handy!

The Calcium Key: The Revolutionary Diet Discovery That Will Help You Lose Weight Faster
A breakthrough diet book from the discoverer of the calcium-weight loss connection–as seen on CNN and in Reader’s Digest

Many people cut back on or stop eating dairy products when they try to lose weight. That’s a mistake. As Michael Zemel’s pioneering, peer-reviewed clinical research has proved, consuming low-fat dairy products actually helps people lose weight–70% more weight (and 64% more fat) than calorie restriction alone. The key is calcium, which causes fat cells to produce less fat and helps the body break down existing fat. Now, in the year’s most innovative diet book, Dr. Zemel translates his research into an amazingly effective weight-loss program. According to Dr. Zemel, consuming low-fat dairy foods–milk, yogurt, and cheese–is the easiest way to boost calcium intake, though he also discusses calcium supplements and other sources of calcium. Complete with tasty, nutritional low-fat menu plans that help people get the 1,200 to 1,600 milligrams of calcium they need daily to stimulate weight loss, The Calcium Key is just what people need to shed pounds fast and stay slim.

Michael Zemel, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Departments of Nutrition and Medicine at the University of Tennesee and is the Director of the Nutrition Institute at the University. He has published more than 120 research papers in such prestigious journals as The New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American College of Nutrition, Journal of Nutrition, International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders, American Journal of Physiology, Journal of Endocrinology, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, and many more. He discovered the calcium-obesity connection and has received a genetic patent on this area.

Customer Review: Good science, could be shorter
It is nice to have a book with reasonable scientific theory and actual test results. My only real interest here is if dairy/calcium really are proven to be so beneficial and the biological mechanism explaining it. This goes for blood pressure as well as weight loss. I was satisfied on these accounts. The rest was typical diet book follow-up on the theoretical, recipes and all. Whatever. I like almost all dairy products, so implementation is easy for me. On a personal level, I was a skinny kid and drank milk like crazy. I also devoured cheese and ice cream. I grew into a lean athlete as a teen and more muscle in my twenties. Still loved my milk and cheese. But about 34 I started gaining fat. I had money finally and was eating richer. I was no longer a kid either. Injuries cut way back on athletic pursuits. And I stopped drinking milk. Any relation? Hard to say given all the other factors. I’m not convinced this is much of a weight loss trick, likely a minor factor to add to exercise and cutbacks in calories. But it likely is good for your overall health more than taking the same calories in bread/pasta or corn/soy oil.
Customer Review: The Calcium Diet is realistic
I’ve seen some of the other reviews that state this plan is labor intensive and I write back to you “life is work”. Writing down your food is key. You will be amazed at what you “won’t eat” if you have to write it down. As for the exchanges, it’s like using the food pyramid, which is recommended already. This is not a fad diet plan. The book gives scientific studies, ranging from years of research. The book also states that you can eat what you want, “but portion is key”. So, if you are willing to keep track of what you eat and exercise, you can be successful at losing the weight. Also, for those who can’t imagine cuttng back 500 calories a day,it’s like eating a candy bar and 1 cookie less than you already eat. Now you can replace that with several cups of veggies, just read this book. It’s great.

Transform Any Diet from Impossible to Achievable with the Power of Your Mind-Body Connection

What’s missing from the hundreds of diets on the market to help us achieve healthier bodies? “The most important element,” teaches Dr. Steven Gurgevich, “is not in the body—but in your mind.” As a key member of Dr. Andrew Weil’s physician’s training program, Dr. Gurgevich has brought hypnosis to the forefront of modern medicine. With The Self-Hypnosis Diet, he shows that anyone can use medical hypnosis to achieve long-term success in shifting our appetites to healthier foods and reaching our desired weight. With 3 CDs of instruction for using hypnosis to reduce your appetite, increase your metabolism, remove emotional barriers, and more—plus an “emergency” session to instantly deal with cravings.

Customer Review: Gurgevich
Gurvevich has a smooth, assuring voice; and he teaches you how you can control your own mind. No one but you can hypnotize you. He doesn’t control your mind; but, he teaches you how to be in better control of your ’self.’
Customer Review: Change comes from within… Self-awareness awaits!
Dr. Gurgevich knows what he is doing when it comes to hypnosis for weight loss. While I didn’t have the problem that a lot of the reviewers had with his voice, I agree that the CD quality and production values could have been improved. I prefer his other book The Self-Hypnosis Diet: Use The Power Of Your Mind to Reach Your Perfect Weight. If you’re a woman looking to lose weight, I’d also recommend looking into Body Esteem: Weight Loss Through Self-Discovery (includes 2 Audio CDs). For the same price you get two CD’s and a workbook. Sherri Dawson’s audio programs are wonderful, accompanied by sounds of nature and relaxing music. It’s all about what works for you. The bottom line is I needed to look inside of me for the answer to my weight struggle rather than quick fix diets and pills. Find a book/audio program that is relaxing to listen to and helps you develop the inner path to self-awareness and happiness.

Customer Review: a dieter in Marietta, GA
I don’t know why this diet never quite made it. I first saw it on one of the morning shows and decided to try it then. I never felt like I was on a diet because I enjoyed what I was allowed to have. The weight AND inches came off very quickly. The book says that unless you have the “starvation response” that this diet will not work for you. However, I had a good idea that I had the problem after reading the beginning chapters. This diet WORKS. If you are looking for something new, I would recommend this not so new diet. Again, I don’t understand why it didn’t stick around longer.
Customer Review: A Revolutionary Approach to Dieting!!!!!!
This principle actually works!! It will take some getting used to, but it is worth a try. The author is a scientist and his thesis is based on regulation of blood sugar and the glycemic index of food.Fascinating!!!!!!!You will love how any excess fat disappears from places you thought it would never leave!!!!!!

Invisible Illnesses
THIS BOOK IS WRITTEN FOR THE MILLIONS OF “INVISIBLE ILLNESS” VICTIMS, who are viewed with suspicion, hostility and anger in a world and consciousness that demands scientific evidence and double-blind studies before acknowledging the condition is “Real.” This book will provide some of that much needed scientific evidence to facilitate validation of these syndromes. It’s important to keep in mind that science does not make or invent principles; they merely discover them.

The information in this book will assist the reader in the discovery of the causes of their distress, while also providing non-drug solutions to restore health and regain quality of life, Naturally.

Customer Review: A good resource, but should not be your only resource
Gilbere wrote a kind of “one size fits all” book for people with MCS, fibromyalgia, and other psychosomatic/chemical and difficult-to-define diseases. I would agree that a fresh approach is necessary, particularly with the way Western medicene treats people with psychosomatic illnesses. I would encourage anyone to read the book and utilize the suggestions in the book as appropriate, with several caveats. First, the book reads like an advertisement for the different products that Gilbere has used or recommends for people with MCS. By all means, if they help you, buy them, but I would carefully consider what may or may not help you before you spend a lot of money. Second, the book is somewhat poorly written and dances around the issue of what really will cure specific diseases. Your specific problem may be solved by just one of her recommendations, or none of them, but her shotgun approach involves a great deal of time, effort, and possibly discomfort for the patient and much of the products and procedures can be debated as to whether they are helpful - or proven. Last, the book does cover the emotional elements of psychosomatic/chemical illnesses but is perhaps underemphasized. WAY underemphasized. I would recommend the book, as I mentioned in the title, but I wouldn’t use it as your only resource. Also, good judgement must be used - the book can do more harm than good if you are averse to chemical smells or food additives and so on - reading about the different negative effects of chemicals and what is making our air, food, and enviornment toxic can lead to greater fear of adverse effects and a more restricted lifestyle. econ

To meet this need, clinicians and scientists at the world-famous St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital have compiled the most comprehensive and compassionate family reference available. Customer Review: This book was a must have for our family
This handbook explained how cancer develops and answered many of my families questions on the side-effects of chemo and radiation therapy. We even bought extras to share with our extended family.
Customer Review: A comprehensive guide for parents of children with cancer
Drs. Steen and Mirro and the many other contributers from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital have made a significant contribution to the clinical care of children with cancer in their editing of this new book. The chapters cover many topics to give parents an overview of the current scientific understanding of childhood cancers, along with state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment procedures. This will be an invaluable aid to the unfortunate parents who have to face along with their children an often overwhelming battle for their precious little lives. The authors highlight the magnificent progress that has been made in the past 40 years as many childhood cancers can now be successfully treated almost 80% of the time. It covers spiritual, psychological and social aspects of treatment and even the topic of alternative therapies. It includes testimonials of success and a chapter dealing with the hardest topic–letting a child die when there is no longer any reasonable hope for curative treatment. It informs parents about the testing procedures their children will have and talks about the research-related issues that they will likely encounter. It provides useful address and links for support groups and additional information. I would highly recommend this book for parents and the professionals who deal with those parents who have children with cancer.

Don’t be afraid to try this diet, but make sure you read the whole book carefully first and do research by reading about other low-carb diets and low-carb websites. The most important contribution of this book is that it can encourage people to experiment with all foods to find the diet that best fits them at the time. The fact that Dr. Atkins challenged the mainstream dietary advice helped open the door for people that need high-fat and/or high-animal-protein and/or low-carb diets at any phase in their lives. This diet may or may not be right for you, but do some research to find out, because for some people it can be great.

Calm Energy: How People Regulate Mood with Food and Exercise

Calm Energy: How People Regulate Mood with Food and Exercise
You are what you eat, but why are you eating so much? Your moods! Why can’t you stay with a reasonable exercise program, and why is obesity at epidemic proportions in our society today? Negative moods hold the explanations. Feeling down? Wish you had more energy and less stress? If this describes you some or most of the time, you are probably among the millions today who respond to increasing stress and low moods with food–a candy bar, or perhaps a cup of coffee and a sweet. Such “emotional eating” may temporarily boost your spirits, but this effect is a short-lived quick fix that perpetuates chronic overeating and obesity. Moreover, the same negative moods that have grown to substantial proportions in society today, sap your resolve to exercise. In this breakthrough book, an acclaimed mood researcher tackles the problem of overweight and inactivity from the perspective of mood. Thayer compellingly argues that it is our moods–beyond nutritional needs–that signal our bodies to desire food we really don’t need in order to replenish our energy and to lower stress levels. Consciously or unconsciously, we constantly seek “calm energy” to face the challenges of the day. Eating is often our first response to a bad mood–as opposed to other, less-fattening forms of self-medication, like listening to music or just slowing down–but, as Thayer explains with clarity and abundant scientific research, we would do much more to raise our spirits in the long run by something as simple as a 10 minute walk. Various forms of exercise are proven mood regulators in ways this book describes in detail. Sound like common sense? Perhaps, but if the choice is exercise or a snack, the snack usually wins out unless we understand our moods. This understanding is the real key. We must see why we eat too much before we can control what and how much we eat. From this we learn the reasons for the inevitable failures at diet and exercise. This provocative new approach to understanding and fighting overeating offers practical advice and biological explanations for your cravings and moods, and it shows how both are indicators of energy and stress levels. Thayer describes how most people’s daily energy cycles function, and he explains how you can apply this in scientifically proven ways to fight the urge to eat when you are down and to achieve the optimum goal of “calm energy.”

Physical therapists who work with the geriatric population will also find the resource useful because it will bring them up to date on meeting the nutrition and exercise needs of older adults as they progress through the physiological changes that come with aging. Psychiatrists will use the practical information to ensure proper counseling, healthy nutrition, and appropriate exercises for patients with eating disorders and disordered eating.

The Magic Pill: A Mental Health Companion for the Gastric Bypass Patient

The Magic Pill: A Mental Health Companion for the Gastric Bypass Patient
The Magic Pill - A Mental Health Companion for the Gastric Bypass Patient was first released in 2002 and is back for a limited time due to patient and practice demand. This is the book that continues to inspire support group discussions, and urges every patient to practice weight loss management and maintenance successfully.

Not only has the author used research and personal experience to demonstrate the behavioral connection between your health and your happiness. But she’s taken that research to the next level by explaining how for many postoperative patients- the cycle of overeating and imbalance in your eating lives cannot be broken by a surgical intervention alone.

Customer Review: Absolutely Horrible!
This book is so disappointing! It is terribly written, much more like a pamplet than a book. There is so little information that the book contains a 2 inch margin at the top and bottom of every page, plus repeats the complete name of the book and author on every page, then also has many pages that are almost completely blank! The 107 pages could easily be covered in 25 pages, but even then it would not be worth reading!

Customer Review: Needed a proofreader!
It is unfortunate that Holtzclaw’s important message is lost in such a mess. The main problem with this book is that it is so riddled with spelling, gramatical and punctuation errors, that it is impossible to read without becoming irritated. Did she not have an editor? Didn’t anyone bother to actually read through the manuscript before sending it off to a printer? Also, there is not enough substance here for a book in the first place and the author ends up saying the same things over and over again to fill up the pages. I found this to be a very frustrating read on many levels and I’m sorry I wasted my money on such an amateur effort!

The Teenage Human Body Operator’s Manual
The Teenage Human Body Operator’s Manual is a book for teens and parents to share. What’s in it for teens? A lot. One, it gives vital information about health issues they face every day. Two, it shows teens a way to learn how to maintain a healthy body-mind. This highly illustrated book is easy to read with its hundreds of jazzy cartoons. Teens will relax with its humor and honesty. What’s in it for parents? A really important key. The Teenage Human Body Operator’s Manual opens doors to parent-teen communication. Parents want to talk to their teens about sex and other health matters, but how many actually do? Not many. It’s not a “time” problem, either. Parents need a plausible premise, a way to break the ice that doesn’t turn teens off. This book can do it. Parents and teens will start talking by laughing and looking at this funny collection of pictures and facts.

Customer Review: Every teenager needs the information in this book
There is a reason “The Teenage Human Body Operator’s Manual” is in its 5th printing. This is an easily accessible and entertaining manual for preteens and teenagers tackling the tough issues facing today’s adolescents. It provides candid and helpful information on topics including nutrition, hygiene, communication, physical health, stress, anger, depression, substance abuse, STDs, sexual assault, abusive relationships, steroids, eating disorders, tattoos, piercing, and branding, safer sex, condoms, sexual preference, [...], birth control, and pregnancy. It also presents a helpful 5 step process for changing bad habits. As a school-based behavioral health psychologist who has worked with over 1,000 adolescents in the past decade, I highly recommend this book for teenagers, teachers, health educators, counselors, parents, and anyone else who has the opportunity to work with kids.
Customer Review: Just what the doctor ordered…
This book–printed to look like an automobile owner’s manual–is just the right blend of humor and seriousness. I use it to help teach groups of foster children about basic lifeskills. We always start with the last half of the book, that includes the “Routine Checkup.” This is a questionnaire (multiple choice) that helps kids get in touch with their habits, and helps them learn how to change a habit and develop good ones. Kids often laugh at the book when they get it, but it is there for them with accurate information when they have a question about anything that comes up in their teenage years–peer pressure, drugs and alcohol, sexuality, exercise, eating right, taking care of themselves, anger, body changes, etc. Some of the illustrations (all ink drawing/cartoons by the illustrator) were a bit goofy looking for my taste, but my son says, “Dad, you’re trippin’. They’re cool.” It’s the best $12 I ever spent for my own son, and I highly recommend this book.

Customer Review: Excellent resource
I bought this book a few years ago after being diagnosed with MVP. I read the personal stories and felt great sympathy for the people who were experiencing so many symptoms which I didn’t have. However, in the past two years, I have experienced many new symptoms and this book has been so reassuring and helpful in giving me ideas about how to control them. I have found Dr. Scordo to have much more knowledge about MVP than any of the primary care physicians I have visited. This book has been immensely helpful to me and I would highly recommend it to anyone diagnosed with MVP.
Customer Review: EXCELLENT!
At first I was a little concerned because of some of the negative reviews. But I did my research and found Dr. Scordo’s information at the faculty site of her university. The book will speak for itself. It is excellent with excellent information. Love the stories of other people with MVPS and love all the helpful advice. I too am a teacher and appreciated the additional references in the book. Without any doubts, this is a great book for those who want to learn more about MVP!
