Customer Review: Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color
Did you every wonder about the following?

Why do men tend to have darker skin than women? Why do the poorest countries have the darkest people? Why do some African American celebrities seem to get lighter over time? Why do I have a tan even when I do not go out in the sun?

If so, Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color is a must read for you.

Thienna was born in Vietnam where white skin is treasured as a characteristic of beauty. Her mother, sister and brothers had a light complexion but she did not. This caused Thienna much distress.

By the time Thienna was twelve years old, her family moved to San Francisco. She tried several things to lighten her skin but it only darkened it. Thienna came to the conclusion that scientific research did not have the answer to her questions.

Since Thienna is a nutritionist, she started her quest by investigating how nutrition influences skin color. She was able to make many connections between what people eat and their skin color. As the author continued her research and experimentation, her skin color lightened. It is important to point out that she did not use any toxic or botanically based chemicals, no drugs and no steroids.

The author gives us some very interesting facts regarding Von Luschan’s Chromatic Scale, the first tool used to classify skin color.

Thienna points out that melanin is the basic building block of your skin pigment; however, its characteristics make it very difficult to study.

The author states that one of the most important determinants of skin color is the amount of sulfur in the skin. If you change the amount of sulfur in the pigment producing layers of your skin, you can change the skin color.

Another factor in determining skin color is the environment.

Thienna gives the reader detailed information on selecting a diet that is good for the skin and tells us about foods and drugs we should not even touch.

Unlocking the Mystery to Skin Color is an intriguing and interesting book. It is very obvious that the author has done much research in order to be able to write this book. This book is easy to understand and gives the reader a thorough history on skin color. Throughout the book there are sections called “Warning” where the author advises the reader on what they should not do. There are several photographs, charts and lists to help the reader understand the points the author is making. The reader will also find a lists of “Dos and Don’ts” in order to have fantastic skin. Thienna backs up her research with several before and after photos of people who have been able to lighten their skin by using her method. If you are interested in changing your skin color or want more information about restoring damaged skin, this is the book for you. The author has done a thorough job in writing this book and if you ever had any questions regarding skin color, I’m sure you will find the answers here. As the author states, skin color is not fixed. Thienna gives the reader plenty to think about. I know it made me do a lot of thinking as I read this book. Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color is highly recommended.

Customer Review: The guide to natural way of lightening your skin color
Reviewed by Olivera Baumgartner-Jackson for Reader Views (2/08)

The first time I truly and really became aware of importance and influence of skin color was when I moved to USA 8 years ago. Growing up in Europe skin color just wasn’t an issue, or at least not one that would merit more than a second’s pause when one met somebody of a different race. I have to admit I never gave it much thought, and even after reading Thi?nna Ho’s book, I found myself quite surprised that my home country ranks among those with the absolute lightest people on the planet. Skin color was not and still is not anything that defines a person in my eyes, but unfortunately I had to learn that in certain parts of the world it truly matters enormously. Whether we like to admit it or not, life in the USA is easier if you happen to be lighter skinned. I am not going to moralize nor preach about this issue; suffice to say that I do understand why a person would want to lighten her or his skin if they could do it safely.

Thi?nna Ho’s “Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color” carries a long subtitle, namely “The Strictly Natural Way to Dramatically Lighten Your Skin Color Through Diet and Lifestyle.” While the cover photos failed to convince me that the color change in Thi?nna Ho’s own case was quite this dramatic, I see absolutely nothing wrong with the diet and lifestyle changes that she recommends. All of us would benefit from eating smarter, moving more, eliminating toxins and stress from our life, taking nice long baths and indulging in massages - which are some of her tips.

It is obvious that Thi?nna Ho performed an outstanding amount of research while developing her method and writing her book. Just a glance through the over 40 pages of endnotes shows the great number and diversity of sources used in writing “Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color.” The book is actually quite interesting reading for the general public as well, dealing with diverse topics such as the great variety of the human skin colors, melanin, influence of sulfur on the skin color, the role of the environment as well as several chapters on nutrition and lifestyle. The surprisingly easy to read and understand style contributes to the feeling that this book should not be intimidating to anybody - it is written in such a way that a general reader can get enough useful information; and the more advanced or a professional one will find another nearly 100 pages of data, tables and sources in the appendices.

Regardless of whether you pick up “Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color” because you truly want to lighten your complexion or out of sheer curiosity, I am certain that you will learn a lot of both useful tips and fascinating trivia about an attribute that we all posses and which oftentimes defines us - even when it should not.

Customer Review: Proposes Iodine as Prevention and Treatment for Breast Cancer
Breast Cancer and Iodine by David Derry MD PhD, is a unique 100 page volume which presents the academic case for iodine as prevention and treatment of breast cancer. The book should be handed out freely during October Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Although written for the lay reader, it should be required reading for all medical students, breast surgeons, mammographers, breast cancer oncologists and any doctor who orders mammograms. With ten pages of medical references including the work of B A Eskin and W R Ghent, Dr. Derry discloses the remarkable connection between iodine deficiency, fibrocystic breast disease and breast cancer. Iodine’s anti-cancer activity lies in its control of apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Derry presents case studies complete with surgical pathology confirmation showing regression of both fibrocystic breast disease and carcinoma-in-situ breast cancer with iodine treatment. He also presents a case report case of infiltrating breast cancer involving the skin which regressed after prolonged application of topical Lugol’s iodine solution. I can report from the experience of my own family members that iodine supplementation causes regression of fibrocystic breast disease. Derry’s ideas in the book could be easily revised into an NIH grant proposal to research and confirm the role of iodine. To do so would advance the nation’s health and be a great public service. Iodine is safe, inexpensive and readily available without a prescription. A US policy of iodine supplementation matching the Japanese dietary intake of iodine could very well be our best preventive measure against breast cancer. Jeffrey Dach MD
Customer Review: useful information well explained
This information about preventing cancer is 100% in-line with my experiences with my patients. I have seen every case of fibrocystic breasts clear up in weeks with iodine. This book provides a lot of original hypothesises about how and why iodine works the way it does. With further research, I think some of them will certainly be verified. Others are good working models for our current understanding.

Customer Review: A Cognitive Approach to Eating Disorders
This book is very heavily based on cognitive and rational-emotive therapy as a way to control emotions, and therefor destructive eating patterns. Dr. Sandbek talks about the differences between constructive negative emotions (like sadness) and negative destructive emotions (like depression), and their consequent constructive and destructive behaviors. You learn to recognize that destructive emotions come from distorted thoughts. He recommends taking all the ugly things one says to themselves and thinking of it as a seperate internal voice. Then you learn to argue with and defeat the “Voice.” Dr. Sandbek also emphasizes time management and stress reduction techniques. On the negative side Dr. Sandbek doesn’t appear to have an iota of a feminist perspective in him (at one point he recommends anorexics look Playboy so they can see how much thinner they are then women “men consider attractive”), which is startling considering how many women this disease affects. This isn’t too much of a concern however, since clearly his intent is to help women overcome disempowering emotions and behaviors, with clinical proven cognitive tools.

Customer Review: Serious Nutrition
As much as people dont think that nutrition is important to the serious athlete, they are wrong. One of the keys unlocking your potential is what you put into your body. This book is one of my favorites, and serious athletes should follow it to a T.

Mothers and Their Adult Daughters: Mixed Emotions, Enduring Bonds
The mother-daughter tie takes on unique characteristics as daughters enter midlife and mothers enter old age. Incorporating vivid descriptions by mothers and daughters about their relationships, author Karen L. Fingerman addresses both the rewards and the difficulties these women experience in maintaining their relationships into old age.

Based on interviews with forty-eight mothers over the age of seventy and their adult daughters, Dr. Fingerman begins with an overview of this relationship, which, she points out, can be distinguished from other social ties by the strength of the mother-daughter bond. She then discusses the positive features of this bond and various theories about its social and psychological nature. This discussion is followed by an examination of problems encountered between mothers and daughters. This last section looks at reactions of mothers and daughters to tensions, conflicts, communication problems, and other difficulties.

This excellent study will be of interest to every mother and daughter and to those who study this very special relationship that lasts a lifetime.

Customer Review: Disappointing
I purchased this book months and months ago and have never completed it. I found it not to be what I had expected; it is very boring and provides little, if any, suggestions for better mother/daughter relationships.
Customer Review: A Touching and Perceptive Look at Mother-Daughter Relationships
Karen Fingerman has chose to examine the quality of the mother-daughter tie during “an under-researched period of the life span — when daughters are grown and have entered midlife, but their mothers remain healthy.” Fingerman’s book is much more of an academic read than a popular book, but it’s likely to appeal to some of the readers who have helped to put other mother-daughter books (most notably Nancy Friday’s book My Mother, My Self) on the bestseller lists. Her book includes chapters on the joys and challenges of the mother-daughter relationship, dealing with conflict, and recognizing the ways in which the mother-daughter relationship evolves over time. Fingerman is at her most compelling when she dares to write about the unspeakable — how mothers and daughters manage to deal with the fact of the mother’s mortality. In describing her most recent visit with her mother, one of the 48 daughters interviewed in the book describes about how increasingly bittersweet the mother-daughter relationship becomes as the mother grows older and the daughter is forced to face the ticking of a very different type of biological clock: “I felt very happy to be with her. But I kind of came away feeling also kind of sad. The last couple of years, my sisters and I have talked about [the fact] that we all sort of feel this way when we’re with her. It’s bittersweet because she’s not well, and she’s almost 80. So you know you’re not going to have a whole lot of [time].” Fingerman doesn’t shy away from tough topics, nor does she try to turn her portrait of the mother-daughter relationship into an extended play version of a Hallmark greeting card. The result is a book that will ring true for any adult woman who is lucky enough to have a mother who is still in good health, and who wants to find out more about the fascinating mother-daughter bond.

Sex, Lies, and Menopause: The Shocking Truth About Synthetic Hormones and the Benefits of Natural Alternatives

In this revolutionary work — a landmark that signals the true beginning of feminist medicine — a doctor, a philosopher, and a scientist prove that by postponing marriage and motherhood, women have accelerated the aging process, resulting in earlier menopause and, ultimately for thousands, earlier death. In Sex, Lies, and Menopause, T.S. Wiley, Julie Taguchi, M.D., and Bent Formby, Ph.D., turn thirty years of medical and cultural wisdom on its head, challenging both

the medical establishment and modern feminists who believe women can delay childbearing that menopause, a natural state of female maturity, does not have to lead to potentially deadly medical conditions.

Sex, Lies, and Menopause offers strong evidence that the use of synthetic hormones leads to cancer and advises women to turn to natural hormone replacement therapy — derived from plants, not drugs — to help them elevate their estrogen level for greater energy, libido, and intellectual capacity. A groundbreaking effort of creative insight and astute research, this book fearlessly tackles one of the greatest health crises facing American women today.

Provocative, empowering, and scientifically sound, Sex, Lies, and Menopause addresses the inherent benefits of natural progesterone, reveals the lies advanced by the medical and drug establishments, and challenges women to demand a medical future where their health comes first. The research presented here will at last allow women to create their own plan of action by safely putting themselves on the path to better health and hormonal balance at any stage of life.

Customer Review: Women of all ages….Listen up!!!
This could be one of the most important books you will ever read! I would suggest every woman read it, read it again and read it again until you understand it…it is quite complicated and in depth, but could help you save your own life…then take what you learn with you to your own Doctor and you will be quite shocked how little “they” know about “your” body. You will have to do the work here. When you discover the lies women have been told about everything from “biological clocks” to “menopause is just a natural stage we go through” you will be outraged! I will never again be the same after reading this book . That is how profoundly it has changed my life. Yes, some of the advice is very hard to follow in todays world, but at least you will be armed with the “truth” and nothing but good can come out of that…Please, please I implore every woman to read this book..when you actually get to menopause you will wish you had had this book years earlier. I cannot stress enough how it is not just for women in menopause, but for every female. This is what you always “knew in you gut” to be true. The depth of this work is mind blowing. We owe these people who did all this research a huge THANK YOU !!
Customer Review: Poorly done
While purporting to expose “the shocking truth about hormone replacement therapy,” Sex, Lies, and Menopause is poorly written, even incoherent at times, and only adds to the confusion about HRT. The book is poorly researched, hard to read and contains glaring inaccuracies. In short, I found this book a real disappointment, especially during such a trying time in a woman’s life.

The structure of this new edition is more conducive to learning and features the following: - Chapter objectives - Key terms - Sidebars of capsule research studies - Testimonials, vignettes, and other tidbits that tie the research information to the real world - Review questions to assist students in synthesizing and remembering the information - Short lists of recommended reading in each chapter for those who want to pursue the topic in more detail - A glossary at the end of the book

This second edition is organized into five parts. Part I provides an introduction to aging, to the field of gerontology, and to the research process for studying individual differences. Part II describes the physical changes in structure, capacity, and endurance. Part III overviews the factors related to motor coordination, motor control, and skill learning for older adults. Part IV addresses physical-psychosocial relationships, including health, exercise, and cognitive function as well as health-related expectations of quality of life for older adults. Part V highlights physical performance and achievement especially to showcase the results from consistent effort and hard work of physically elite older adults as inspiration for others.

Menopause and the Mind: The Complete Guide to Coping with Memory Loss, Foggy Thinking, Verbal Confusion, and Other Cognitive Effects of Perimenopause and Menopause

Menopause and the Mind: The Complete Guide to Coping with Memory Loss, Foggy Thinking, Verbal Confusion, and Other Cognitive Effects of Perimenopause and Menopause

Menopause and the Mind gives every woman the survival kit she needs to manage the thinking and memory symptoms — long overlooked by the medical establishment — that accompany the onset of perimenopause and menopause. As early as their late thirties, many women begin to experience a range of startling changes in the way they speak, remember, drink, and navigate. Sometimes, these changes begin with occasional “slips of the tongue.” Other times, a former champion speller realizes that she’s isn’t so sure how to spell “potato” or “forty,” or an organization maven loses track of her appointments. Some women find they can’t remember the name of their oldest friend, or how to turn on the computer. Others put the shampoo bottle in the refrigerator instead of the shower caddy, or forget where they are going en route to the supermarket they’ve shopped at for years. These symptoms occur with greater frequency as women enter their forties, fifties, and beyond, but often they are chalked up to stress or age. However, repeated lapses in memory and recurrences of foggy thinking can be terrifying, causing some women to wonder, “What’s happening to me? Could this be early Alzheimer’s Disease?”

Neuropsychologist Claire Warga provides the first scientific explanation for this common “hormonal misconnection” syndrome. Drawing upon recent brain and clinical research, she shows that forgetfulness, malapropisms, and lost concentration are not manifestations of dementia or senility; instead, they result from the depletion of estrogen in the brain cells of women as they enter perimenopause and menopause. Armed with this knowledge, Warga offers women a breakthrough plan for regaining control and confidence in their minds.

Warga explains in clear, simple language the cutting-edge science that underlies the “hormonal misconnection” syndrome. Research shows that a decrease in estrogen — which begins with the onset of perimenopause at about age 35 — produces detectable changes in the parts of the brain having to do with memory and attention, and can affect multiple neurotransmitter systems. There is also evidence that estrogen loss impacts verbal memory and learning. Yet remarkably, the medical establishment has failed tot use this research to help the millions of perimenopausal and menopausal women who suffer from speech, memory, attention, or cognitive/behavioral symptoms. Most doctors know a good deal about the physical and emotional symptoms of menopause, but little about how it affects the brain. Claire Warga fills this vacuum and provides every woman with the information she needs to take care of herself on her own and in consultation with her doctor.

Menopause and the Mind includes a wide range of real-life stories — such as the menopausal woman who was misdiagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic — that illustrate how different women have coped with their “hormonal misconnection” symptoms. Warga explains the full range of thinking, speech, short- and long-term memory, behavior, spatial, and time sense symptoms in extensive detail, complete with an array of examples. Most important are a self-screening test and symptom chart that every woman can use to understand the extent of her symptoms and accurately assess her condition, with or without her ob/gyn. Women can also make practical use of Warga’s detailed guide to treatment options, which include estrogen therapy, dietary and behavioral changes, and techniques for improving memory.

Women today live longer and are more active than ever before. Menopause and the Mind ensures that every woman can live without embarrassment or fear that she is “losing it” as she grows older. With Claire Warga’s roadmap of the relationship between estrogen and the brain, women can develop the practical coping tools they need to lead happy and productive lives.

Customer Review: a must read
This book was excellent in helping me understand what was happening to me. It did not do a very good job of covering treatment options. I read Menopause for Dummies which didn’t cover my symptoms as well as this book did, but did an excellent job of covering the treatment options.

Customer Review: Poorly Written
Dr. Warga may or may not have something to say about menopause and the mind, but for the life of me, I can’t decipher her writing. I am amazed that Simon and Schuster let this book see the light of day without more editing. I’ve never read so many long, tortured, and confusing sentences. Good writing does matter.

Customer Review: Good introduction for those new to vegetarianism
I first read this in junior high, when I tried being a vegetarian the first time. I loved it and I learned a lot from it. When I returned to vegetarianism as a young adult, I read it again. Although I’m not a teenager anymore, I feel the book is still a handy guide for making the difficult transition to being a vegetarian a lot easier. When people question the food you eat or don’t eat and challenge your beliefs on the subject, it can be hard — this book offers advice for what to do and say in all sort of situations, educates you on nutrition, and gives you basic ideas for meals. “A Teen’s Guide to Going Vegetarian” doesn’t assume you have a lot of money, time, or resources for food shopping and meal preparation (as teenagers and adults alike usually don’t), so it’s great for anyone who needs to be frugal or doesn’t have a lot of time to search for unusual ingredients. But it does introduce you to foods you might not of heard of or tried before, which is important.
Customer Review: This is a must-have for teen vegetarians
I have been a vegetarian for almost two years but I had never really read any books about it. Before I buy something, I always read the reviews, and this book had such good reviews. It is so helpful and fun to read. It has a lot of information such as what they really do to animals at slaughterhouses. It is really sad and it made me become a vegan, but it is necessary that aspiring vegetarians/vegans are aware of it. In every chapter, it has things that you can do to help. It also gives the titles of other books that you can read to find out more. I would definetely reccomend this book to anyone who wants to be a vegetarian or who already is one.

The pH Balance Diet: Restore Your Acid-Alkaline Levels to Eliminate Toxins and Lose Weight

Quick and easy yet informative and thorough, The pH Balance Diet tells how to pH-test one’s body, correct imbalances, and eliminate toxic overload by following a dietary way of life that works. The book details the physiological process that occurs when digested foods create a pH imbalance. For example, since the body is naturally alkaline, problems arise when it processes too many acid-forming foods such as meat, dairy, wheat and sugar. The resulting excess acid waste leads to low energy levels, poor skin condition, brittle bones and serious health issues, including weight gain. The pH Balance Diet is a system that dramatically reverses this process. It reveals the top 80 alkaline-forming superfoods and specifies which acid-forming foods to avoid. An easy-to-follow section with over 40 recipes?— with?a special section on drinks that features a “juicing-for-superhealth” program — is included to help guide readers through the plan.

Customer Review: A one off comment
I found this book easy to read and pick up and find pages at random however, would like to read some other book on the same subject to compare detail. Seems to differ slightly from internet information I’ve found - by and large very helpful, had some trouble getting the ph test kits and not sure now that I’ve got the right ones, detail in that sphere would have been more helpful. The whole concept is of great interest to me and seems to be of great assistance.
Customer Review: Good pH Balance Resource Book
I purchased this book as I began my own research into adapting a pH balanced diet. It has been very helpful. I also believe it is easier to read and absorb the information over some of the other books on the same subject. It offers an easy to follow diet, if one wants to go 100% into the program. For others, the information provided is easy to adapt into any diet program. Simple to follow recipes are included too, some I have tried with good results.

Staying Healthy With Nutrition, 21st Century Edition: The Complete Guide to Diet and Nutritional Medicine

Staying Healthy With Nutrition, 21st Century Edition: The Complete Guide to Diet and Nutritional Medicine
STAYING HEALTHY WITH NUTRITION compiles decades of practical experience and scientific research into a one-stop encyclopedic volume on nutritional medicine. In this thoroughly revised and updated edition, Dr. Elson Haas presents the most current health and nutrition information available. It’s the ultimate handbook to maximum health, longevity, and general well-being.

Customer Review: Great comprehensive book on nutrition.
This is exactly the book I’ve been looking for! Objective, to-the-point facts on nutrition, vitamins, eating habits, and other topics such as preservatives, toxins, etc. I’ve seen too many “fad” nutritional books that are biased toward either vegan/vegetarian, low carb, low fat, high fat-low carb, etc. This book seems to be objective enough to allow the readers to decide on their own what diet path to take. This book, a good diet, and exercise can stand on their own and I feel this book can last a long time as a good reference book. Personally, I prefer a well-rounded diet (including some red meat), chicken, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts. I lean toward organic or natural foods. Should readers decide to focus on another particular diet, they can supplement this book with one that follows their philosophy. I highly recommend this book as a stand alone or as a starting point to other diets.

Customer Review: all in one

Physical Activity And Health
Sedentary habits have been identified as a major public health problem in many countries. The timely Physical Activity and Health addresses an unmet need by providing a comprehensive treatment of the relationship between physical activity and health outcomes.

Physical Activity and Health is the first textbook to bring together the results of the most important studies in this rapidly changing field and offers a detailed yet concise and clear presentation of key concepts. The text provides a conceptual framework to help readers relate results from single studies or collections of studies to the overall paradigm linking physical activity and physical fitness to health.

Written by Claude Bouchard and other leading scientists from around the world, this richly illustrated textbook offers information unmatched in accuracy and reliability. Where other books have simply promoted physical activity for the individual or a population, this book completely integrates and examines the relationship between physical activity and health by

providing a history of physical activity, including how levels of physical activity have changed over time and how this has affected the overall health of society;

highlighting the differences in the effects of physical activity on fitness across age, gender, and ethnic groups;

describing how various systems of the human body respond to physical activity;

illustrating the relationship between physical activity and health concerns such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, and mental health;

offering guidance for determining the proper amount and type of exercise to be undertaken; and

suggesting new directions for research in this growing and changing field.

The text explains the latest advances in understanding the effects of acute and chronic participation in physical activity and reviews the relationships between regular physical activity and health outcomes, including cardiovascular morbidities, mental health, and all-cause mortality. It also focuses on the prevention of diseases, quality of life, and well-being.

The textbook offers the following features:

Chapter outlines that provide a user-friendly, conceptual framework

Key concepts, definitions, and study questions that simplify the review process

179 illustrations, 54 tables, and 51 photographs that clarify the text and emphasize key concepts

Physical Activity and Health is organized into five parts. Part I defines the basic concepts, traces the history of the field, and summarizes evidence accumulated on the relationship between levels of physical activity and fitness and variations with age, between genders, and among ethnic groups. Part II describes the latest advances in understanding the effects of acute and chronic participation in physical activity. Part III reviews the relationships between regular physical activity and health outcomes—including cardiovascular morbidities, mental health, and all-cause mortality—and the levels of fitness and the same health outcomes. Part IV focuses on the “how” and deals with dose-response issues and types of exercise programs. Part V explores how advances in genetics challenge our understanding of the complex relationships between physical activity, fitness, and health. It offers a practical integration of all the issues discussed in the preceding chapters.

Some of the finest scientists in the field from the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia collaborated on this comprehensive resource. Readers can feel confident that they are receiving the most accurate information currently available on physical activity and health in any textbook.

Customer Review: I trained in this program and it helped tremendously
This book started the Self-Management approach to chronic illness. I trained in the Self-Management program and have led groups for years, and have seen people make wonderful changes. This experience and knowledge inspired me to write my book, The Art of Getting Well. Drs Lorig, Holman, Sobel and the other authors lay out all you need to know to develop your programs of exercise, relaxation, emotional support, and healthy eating. They also teach how to deal successfully with medical systems and treatments. The book stresses living the best possible life, not just following medical orders or watching everything you eat. It’s an excellent complement to my book, which will provide some inspiration to attempt the behavior changes that “Living a Healthy Life” explains so well.
Customer Review: Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions…
This book does an excellent job of presenting how chronic illness patients are overwhelmed and how they can aggressively confront the debilitating cycle and successfully manage the lifestyles they must lead. Everyone with a chronic illness is forced to live differently than all others, no matter their age. The book analyzes and describes the depleting cycle that anyone with a chronic, dibilitating illness encounters, and offers proven solutions on how to break the debilitating cycle and progress outward inspite of the illness.

A Teen’s Guide to Going Vegetarian
List Price: $20.10
Used Price: $30.68

How Much Does Your Soul Weigh?: Diet-Free Solutions to Your Food, Weight, and Body Worries

How Much Does Your Soul Weigh?: Diet-Free Solutions to Your Food, Weight, and Body Worries

You hold in your hands a life-changing weight control revelation — a holistic approach to help you overcome all eating and weight problems from anorexia to obesity. This innovative book will shed light on your unsuccessful attempts at dieting and help you begin to heal from the inside out, once and for all!

How many “miracle diets” have you tried? How many minutes and hours have you spent worrying about the numbers on the bathroom scale? How many times have you lost weight only to gain it back along with renewed disappointment and frustration? You’ve worried about how much your body weighs, but have you asked:

How Much Does Your Soul Weigh?

Dr. Doric McCubbrey, a weight-issues specialist whose practice boasts a 95 percent success rate, reveals that the weight of your soul may be preventing you from effecting the changes you want to see in your appearance and self-esteem. By starting Dr. Dorie’s plan for “Intuitive Self-Care,” you can begin to unburden your soul of all the “weighty attitudes” of the diet mentality — rigid rules, negative self-talk, and unrealistic goals — that lead to very real feelings of disappointment and hopelessness.

With empathy and insight, Dr. Doric explores and explains the importance of a soulful attitude toward your eating, exercise, and weight. You’ll discover:

  • the “games” dieters play — and why none of them works
  • the four archetypal weight problems and how to overcome them for good
  • the secrets of naturally thin people — and how you can incorporate them into your life
  • a 30-day plan of therapeutic “recipes” designed especially to nourish your soul
  • Packed with stories from Dr. Dorie’s own 15-year struggle with overeating, anorexia, and bulimia, and the experiences of her clients, How Much Does Your Soul Weigh? shows you how to generate the happiness, health, balance, and confidence that will put your weight worries to rest for good!

Customer Review: Worthwhile, weighty advice. Not fluff!!
    Listen, folks.

I’ve read fluff and this is not it. I think that all of the other diet books ‘the get thin quick’ books are the real fluffy, short-cut, dead end type of books. Not to pick on the reviewer who used the terms ‘New Agey’ and ‘fluff’, but it bothers me very much when, when confronted with terms like ‘intuitive’ and ’self-love’ people automatically junk the advice and don’t even give the advice a fair shake. It seems altogether too common to listen to books simply because they sound scientific or even negative.

I’d say it’s pretty common knowledge that overeating is, in large part, an emotional condition, so taking that into account, this book is smart. It doesn’t tell you how many calories are in a banana or what type of fat is in cheese versus what is in olive oil, but it transcends any and all diets and instead centers on common sense. That being said, I think that people should follow whichever regime feels right for them, but I do agree with the author when she says that ultimately restrictive diets give way to binge eating or other lapses.

A lasting lifestyle change can be found through this book.

    Cheers…

    Customer Review: New Age malarky
If you’re into New Age fluff, you’ll like this book. However if you’re looking for real emotional work that will free you of your feelings-related food obsession, save your money. If you’re a fan of Geneen Roth’s book “Breaking Free” you might like this one. Basically McCubbrey says that your intuition tells you what to eat, when, & how much. Factors are preventing you from getting in touch with your inate intuition. Learn to stop criticizing your body and love yourself because “if God were the ocean, you would be a cupful of ocean water.” You must reclaim “the light of your intuition” and “act as if you never had a weight problem.” A better book: “Shrink Yourself” by Roger Gould MD - a powerful (no fluff) book for realists with weight issues.

    Taming Your Food Monster
This book is about a completely new way to look at the underlying cause and cure of obesity.

Ask any group of scientists, office workers, or people on the street why we are overweight and what to do about it and the answers are sure to come. Unfortunately they are wrong. If the answers were even marginally right, there would not be the explosion of obesity we are experiencing today with close to 100 million obese and another 100 million overweight in the USA alone. They can t all be too lazy to exercise, eat bad food, drink too many sodas, be slothful or any of the litany of horrors that have been slung at them. As they say Texas That dog don t hunt.

The weight loss industry is full of well meaning people have spent a great deal of time and money searching diligently on the wrong paths. They have looked at the symptoms then searched for ways to alleviate them. Unfortunately no matter how diligent the effort, if it starts on the wrong path it is doomed to failure.

Written in a friendly practical manner this book does three things. 1. It dispels many of the myths surrounding weight gain and loss.
    2. It explains in practical understandable language what the underlying cause of obesity is.
    3. It provides a true practical method to eliminate obesity and overweight.

Understanding the real cause of obesity is a scientific breakthrough that sets the stage for ultimate success. Beginning with the key question, if everyone hates being overweight then why do so many people with so little in common eat more than they physically need?

The answer that it is a subconsciously motivated compulsion to eat was gleaned from thousands of interviews. How it is developed is fully explained.

The second scientific breakthrough is how to break the subconscious compulsions. The information on how to cure it is based on test results with real people. How to do the protocol is fully described in a manner that the average person with no scientific background can understand and do.

The pH Miracle: Balance Your Diet, Reclaim Your Health
In many ways, The pH Miracle is reminiscent of an earlier generation of diet books. Much of the focus is on an intestinal cleansing program, followed by a diet that is 70 to 80 percent vegetables, coupled with a tremendous selection of supplements that authors Robert and Shelley Young recommend to everyone, no matter what their age, gender, or state of health. The Youngs point their fingers at candida as a main culprit in the poor health of many people. Unfortunately, they back up their claims with only vague references, such as “a 1991 study” and “a leading cancer researcher.” Many readers may wish for more specific evidence, but instead will have to make do with enthusiastic recommendations, alphabetized lists of vegetables, and pleasing chapters with vegetarian recipes that taste good no matter how you feel about the diet as a whole. Sprinkled throughout the book are short testimonials of people who were able to reverse cancer, improve their digestion, and lower their cholesterol by following these recommendations, and it’s hard to argue with the cholesterol-lowering results that a 70 percent vegetable diet will achieve. Still, the medical value of much else in the book remains hotly contested, and as always, it’s wise to check with your doctor before starting off in search of miracles. –Jill Lightner

The Diet and Health Benefits of Hca: How This All-Natural Diet Aid Promotes Weight Loss and Inhibits Fat Production (Hydroxycitric Acid : How This All-Natural … Weight Loss and Inhibits Fat Production)
    List Price: $3.95

    Customer Review: A good start
This was a good place to start learning about HCA. If you use this book to understand basically how HCA can be used to prevent excess calories from being stored as fat, and to aid in appetite suppression by increasing glycogen stores in the liver, you can then reference the most recent clinical trials (there are now 18 of them) showing that if you take the *proper amount* of HCA, you WILL lose weight with it. The only problem with this book is it is dated, since the new research indicates a daily dosage of 4000 to 6000 mg of HCA for effective weight loss. This book doesn’t reflect this new knowlege. But again, a good place to start learning about this wonderful herb.
    Customer Review: complete humbug
It reads like completely scientifical, but especially when you are not trained, it’s difficult to understand where the writer is wrong and where he’s right. HCA for weight loss is complete nonsens. I tried it myself with no result and recently a scientific study pointed out that HCA has zero effect.

This book is written by a brilliant woman in a language that the average reader will be able to comprehend. The photographs that display the techniques are quite helpful. I certainly plan to employ these techniques in order to find specific foods or other products that are compatible with my children and their unique body chemistries.

Customer Review: Basic Info that Can be Found on the Net
Much of this book is page filler, it advocates Glucosomine and Chondrodin Sulphate as its main “cure” and then talks about eating foods high in antioxidants (which is really old basic info that we can find in plenty of books and websites). It is also very repetative, I remember reading the same subject three times near the beginning (page filler.) Although the book is helpful, especially for really ignorant newbies who hate the internet, it needs to be thinned out and the common knowledge parts taken out.
Customer Review: The Arthritis Cure : The Medical Miracle
I injured my knee around Labor Day and four months later I had minimal results with physical therapy and NSAIDs. My once active life had stopped, every activity I tried, even walking, aggravated my knee. I started on the Glucosomine and Chondrodin Sulphate program along with the vitamin supplements outlined in the book and had great results. After just a few weeks, I am able to hike and workout again. I feel better than I have in months! I know several friends on Glucosomine, but I felt better with the book outlining the dosage and other vitamins to compliment. I have not needed any NSAIDs since I started this therapy. I like that this program has almost no side effects and can help my injury without surgery. Try it for yourself, what do you have to lose but the pain?

Customer Review: crisitsm of Heersinks review
Ive only just learned of this books from the Westonaprice website, so i cant comment on it. But i can comment on Mr Heersinks review. He claims Appleton is a mere PhD, and so not qualified to write on this topic. However, lack of qualifications didnt seem to bother Heersink in another of his reviews: that of Mortimer Adler’s Ten Philsophical mistakes. He wrote the following: ‘Adler is not a “professional” philosopher, but that doesn’t make his contribution any less worthy. Indeed, because of its accessibility and wide terrain, this is an engaging dialectic for most of the prominent philosophers from Plato to Nietzsche, One ought ‘ So, Appleton may not be a ‘professional’MD or DO. That does not make her conrribution any less worthy
    Customer Review: Incredulous Nonsense
Back in the early Seventies, when an undergraduate at Berkeley, I took a nutrition survey course from George Briggs, Ph.D., Department Chair, Nobel Laureate, and the U.S. expert on nutrition. At our first lecture, Briggs excoriated Adele Davis, the Sixties’ food guru, and his former student. Ever since, I’ve viewed “counter theories” with a more suspicious eye. This book is a perfect example of why. Ms. Appleton is a Ph.D., but no scientist. What are her qualifications to debunk the proven germ-theory of disease? None. She’s merely speculating about something nonscientific armchair Ph.D.s have no expertise in. If you really want a scientific account of “Why We Get Sick,” read a book by that name by authors Randolph Nesse and George Williams (M.D. and Ph.D. respectively). They not only prove the germ theory of disease, but give evolutionary reasons for it. Don’t buy this nonsense that doesn’t even reach the level of “junk science,” because there is no science here. This book is quackery, plain and simple. Certainly, not all illnesses are because of, nor exacerbated by, food intolerances. Such panacea descriptions have been debunked over and over, and still people crave to blame disease and disorders on “food intolerances,” and food “allergies,” and other such nonsense. Indeed, I think she’d be hard-pressed to find any such association between food and disease, much less any disease, except for metabolic disorders. Before long, she’ll ascribe even HIV and cancer as the result of food intolerance! Don’t misunderstand me; good nutrition and healthy diets do promote healthy outcomes, but so do microorganisms produce illnesses and disorders far more than mere any food will. Conversely, we know that people who exercise daily and eat four healthy meals a day come down with a plethora of disorders and diseases that have nothing whatsoever to do with food. We do know that diets high in fat, salt, and sugar are not healthy, but this doesn’t excuse the “leap” to “food intolerances” as the cause of things like lymphadentiis, viseral abscesses, septic shock, staphyloccocus, streptococcus, pneumeococcus, Anthrax, Cholera, Meliodosis, Tuberculosis, systemic Fungal, Rickettsial, Chlamydial, Viral, and Parasitic infections, much less immunological, cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, hepatic and bilary, endoctrine, hematological, musculoskeletal, muscular, neurological, psychiatric, genitourinary, and dermatological disorders, to name a few. This book is total and unadulterated nonsense that is just another gimmick in the world of conspiracies. Yes, we really do want to believe that disease is all because of the food we eat, because that’s something we think we can control. To a limited extent, the maxim, “you are what you eat” is apropro. But to make outlandish claims that have no biological, chemical, or physical bases in fact is spurious from the get go. Don’t waste your precious money on these panhandlers. If you want a serious and scientific book on “Why We Get Sick,” seek out Nesse’s and William’s excellent alternative.
