Genetically Engineered Foods: Are They Safe? You Decide.

Genetically Engineered Foods: Are They Safe? You Decide.

Examines the impact of this potentially dangerous technology on food sources, animals, and our own bodies.

Customer Review: Genetically Engineered Foods: Are They Safe? You Decide
Genetic engineering “is probably the largest nutritional experiment the world has ever seen, and we are the guinea pigs” say Laura and Robin Ticciati in their book, Genetically Engineered Foods: Are They Safe? You Decide. They answer with a resounding “No!” to the question of whether genetically engineered foods are safe.

The Ticciatis briefly define genes and DNA, then explain how genetic engineers insert the genes from one organism into another. Genes from flounders, for example, have been inserted in tomato DNA to produce a tomato that has a longer growing season. They maintain that genetic engineering breaks natural crossbreeding rules because species are combined that would never mate in Nature.

Their primary concern lies in the lack of knowlege of the long-term effects from eating genetically engineered foods. They are especially concerned about children. At the least, they want genetically engineered foods to be labeled so that consumers know what they are buying and eating.

The authors say that “Right now, it is estimated that 60-70 percent of the foods in our stores contain genetically engineered components” with 100-150 more expected to be added by the year 2000. “These foods have not been subjected to thorough pre-market safety testing, nor are they labeled.”

Genetically Engineered Foods: Are They Safe? You Decide is must reading for consumers who want to know about the ramifications of modifying foods by artificial gene transfer.

Customer Review: A little book with a big wake up message
Food technology has turned much of what we eat in this country into artificial, processed, chemicalized mishmash. No wonder forty percent of the population is sick! Now comes the latest insult — genetically engineered food. You won’t know that you are eating it because the government doesn’t require food manufacturers/producers to specially label GE food nor does it require any independent safety testing. What you are increasingly eating, as this book shockingly reveals, is unnatural food with the potential to create who-knows-what-damage to your health and the environment. This is a small, easy-to-read, and must-read book, about a huge, serious issue that affects all of us. Science is tampering with our food, and we, the consumers, are the unwitting guinea pigs in this mad experiment.

Customer Review: A 24/7 GUIDE TO LOVING LIFE
Wine lovers read books on wine. Movie lovers read books on movies. And sex lovers read books on, well, sex. But who and what is a breath lover? How do you become one? And why on earth would you want to read a book on breath in the first place? Breathing. An activity we do THOUSANDS of times PER DAY … often without a second thought. Breathing. A gateway to deeper levels of sensual enjoyment. Breathing. A key to clearer perceptions and intense levels of arousal. Breathing. An invitation to be truly relaxed (perhaps for the first time) in your own body. Breathing is all these things. And more. Learning how to tap into these things is the subject of this easy-to-read, easy-to- put-into-practice book. Many of us have read a small library’s worth of self-enlightenment books over the years. But one of the real beauties of reading this book (Lorin Roche’s third in print) is that your life experience becomes richer IMMEDIATELY. Now. This very moment. Within days of picking up the book, walking around and sniffing the air became fun. Applying aftershave became fun. Just watching my chest rise and fall became fun. Eating, naturally, became super fun. And now that I stop to think about it, wine drinking became more fun. Movie watching became more fun. And sex? Well, what do you think? One final note: please don’t think that this book — and the dozens of simple suggestions you’ll find in it — are simply about sniffing, or smelling, or inhaling, or whatever. At the heart of this book is an invitation. An invitation to use breath as an entry into deeper states of MEDITATION. Whether you meditate formally for any given period of time, or whether you want to transform your waking hours into a living-breathing- eating-sleeping extended period of meditation, “Breath Taking” will take you there.

Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions: Self-Management of Heart Disease, Arthritis, Diabetes, Asthma, Bronchitis, Emphysema & Others

Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions: Self-Management of Heart Disease, Arthritis, Diabetes, Asthma, Bronchitis, Emphysema & Others
Drawing on input from people with long-term ailments, this book points the way to achieving the best possible life under the circumstances.

Customer Review: I trained in this program and it helped tremendously
This book started the Self-Management approach to chronic illness. I trained in the Self-Management program and have led groups for years, and have seen people make wonderful changes. This experience and knowledge inspired me to write my book, The Art of Getting Well.

Drs Lorig, Holman, Sobel and the other authors lay out all you need to know to develop your programs of exercise, relaxation, emotional support, and healthy eating. They also teach how to deal successfully with medical systems and treatments.

The book stresses living the best possible life, not just following medical orders or watching everything you eat. It’s an excellent complement to my book, which will provide some inspiration to attempt the behavior changes that “Living a Healthy Life” explains so well.

Customer Review: Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions…
This book does an excellent job of presenting how chronic illness patients are overwhelmed and how they can aggressively
confront the debilitating cycle and successfully manage the lifestyles they must lead. Everyone with a chronic illness is forced to live differently than all others, no matter their age.
The book analyzes and describes the depleting cycle that anyone with a chronic, dibilitating illness encounters, and offers proven solutions on how to break the debilitating cycle and progress outward inspite of the illness.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity: A Survival Guide
People who suffer from multiple chemical sensitivity (or MCS) develop severe allergic reactions to their environments. Solvents, pesticides, fresh paint, new carpets, perfumes, and air fresheners are just a few of the substances that can trigger an MCS attack. The condition is often hard to diagnose, and frustrated patients are frequently shuttled from doctor to doctor. This survival guide is based on the latest MCS research-and on the data that the author accumulated over five years researching the impact of MCS on its victims. She reviews what is known about MCS and its symptoms and provides step-by-step advice for coping with the condition, including taking steps to make your home safe, getting professional help, and mobilizing the support of family and friends.

Customer Review: Excellent Book!
This is an excellent book. I highly recommend it. It is great for people who are new to the MCS/Chemical Sensitivity world. It also takes you allot further. There are so many things in this book that others do not cover. There is also a nice resource listing of where to buy special products just for the Chemically Sensitive individual, I found that very useful as well. I would say if your new to MCS then this is the book for you. It is the most comprehensive, straight forward easy to read version. I would start here and then move on to others by Bonnye L. Matthews Or William Rea.
Customer Review: One of the best books on MCS
My wife suffers from MCS. As such, I have read most of the books available concerning MCS. Most books are from a medical professional covering a particular medical theory or treatment plan for MCS. What makes this book different is that it really explains the impact of MCS on people’s lives. It dispells the myths surrounding the various treatments. The book is based upon surveys and interviews with hundreds of MCS patients. As such, the advice is based upon their experiences. When discussing treatments, statistics are provided on how many people were helped, how many harmed, how many uncertain. This books is great for those new to MCS, those who have been around a long time, those who are patients, those who know someone with MCS. I would recommend this book be added to anyone’s library. This is not the only excellent book on MCS … it is now simply the first book I recommend that people read.

Health Benefits of Vitamin K2: A Revolutionary Natural Treatment for Heart Disease And Bone Loss

Health Benefits of Vitamin K2: A Revolutionary Natural Treatment for Heart Disease And Bone Loss
Though largely unknown, vitamin K is essential to good health. It is needed for the normal clotting of blood and for the formation and maintenance of healthy bones. Although our bodies produce some vitamin K2, we store it in very limited amounts. A lack of this vitamin-which can be caused by a poor diet and the regular use of certain drugs such as antibiotics-is not uncommon. Fortunately, a new supplemental form of vitamin K2, menaquinone-7 (MK-7), is becoming more widely available. Vitamin K2, specifically MK-7, is showing great promise as a natural treatment for heart diseae and bone loss. Available in soy products and as a nutritional supplement, MK-7 is clinically proven to be safe and effective. It may also be helpful for lowering cholesterol, preventing Alzheimer’s disease, and treating some forms of cancer. In “Health Benetis of Vitamin K2, you’ll learn everything you need to know about the extraordinary healing benefits of this vitamin, including the best dietary sources, supplemental forms, suggested dosages, and drug interactions. The High Blood Pressure Solution: A Scientifically Proven Program for Preventing Strokes and Heart Disease

• Proves that the majority of cases of stroke, heart attack, and hypertension can easily be prevented by maintaining the proper ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet.

• Updated with scientific evidence from a recent Finnish study showing a 60 percent decline in deaths attributed to strokes and heart attacks.

• Provides a comprehensive program for balancing body chemistry at the cellular level.

High blood pressure is entirely preventable, without reliance on synthetic drugs. Dr. Moore’s approach is simple: by maintaining the proper ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet, blood pressure can be regulated at the cellular level, preventing the development of hypertension and the high incidence of strokes and heart attacks associated with it. Dr. Moore updates this edition with a new preface reporting on the latest scientific research in support of his program. The most striking results come from Finland, where for several decades sodium chloride has been replaced nationwide with a commercial sodium/potassium mixture, resulting in a 60 percent decline nationwide in deaths attributed to strokes and heart attacks. Extrapolated to America, the Finnish statistics would mean 360,000 strokes prevented and 96,000 lives saved every year.

Dr. Moore makes it clear that high blood pressure is only one symptom of an entire systemic imbalance. He outlines a safe, effective program that focuses on nutrition, weight loss, and exercise to bring the entire body chemistry into balance. For those currently taking blood pressure medications, he includes a chapter on working with your physician to ensure that any reduction in hypertension drugs can be effected gradually and safely.

Customer Review: A Splendid, Eye-Opening Book!
Richard Moore’s book, “The High Blood Pressure Solution,” is by no means perfect. The text is repetitive at times, for example. And the dietary program he recommends is sound, but sketchy; you’ll probably find yourself hunting for additional materials — low salt cook books, for example — to round it out. Despite that, I give this book 5 stars because it may just be one of the most important books of its kind ever written, a book that could conceivably save millions of lives if recognized and adopted worldwide. And there’s every good reason why it should be: the science behind it is absolutely solid. Moore is not only a medical doctor, but ALSO a biophysicist, and this book well reflects that dual background. A little of my own history may be instructive here. I first developed Stage I / II hypertension in the late 1990s, and did little about it. In April of 2002, I was sent to the ER with hypokalemia (low potassium). From that time until now (July, 2007), I obtained effectively NO help from any of the six doctors I consulted. My current provider is terrific in most ways, but even her help on this has been marginal. My complaint with all these people: though they proudly display their medical degrees, NONE had the slightest clue why I had developed high blood pressure. Not one could explain the hypokalemia, or how it related to my hypertension. Only one ever so much as mentioned diet, saying “You’ve cut back on salt, right? Good.” None had any better idea on treatment but to ply me with expensive drugs that inflicted unending and often brutal side effects. Only my current — and very caring — provider took the time to discuss exercise and the critical role it can play. I finally concluded that the word “essential” in the term “essential hypertension” really means, “We don’t have a stinkin’ clue.” And as Dr. Moore has now shown me, they were all wrong. A few medical researchers figured out long ago what causes most hypertension; an even larger number of researchers have known, for DECADES, the best course of treatment. Hint: it isn’t drugs, and it doesn’t require a super-human change in diet or lifestyle for most people. It does make demands, but as I’ve found they are not nearly so onerous as one might imagine. Moore, who as a biophysicist spent his career investigating cellular level functions, explains in simple terms the role of sodium and potassium — the two critical electrolytes — in the life of every cell in your body. This is really just high school level science. Most people can grasp it, but it is technical. If that’s not your thing, Dr. Moore provides chapter summaries and an invitation to skip the hard science parts. I ate it up, however, because for the first time I could see what has been going wrong with my body. And knowledge is power. In just one week, adopting only a rough outline of his recommendations, I pulled my average BP down into a very safe zone … something I’d not seen once in the previous 7 years despite all those medications. Those gains have continued, and I anticipate that in coming months I will bring it down further. The key to this is what Moore calls the K-Factor: the ratio of sodium to potassium that you consume. Americans frequently take in less potassium than sodium. Moore builds a case for aiming to reach a K-Factor of 4 (four times as much potassium as sodium each day). He also touches on other critical health issues, such as Type II diabetes … conditions that may also benefit by adopting a high K-Factor diet. Note that the author does not claim to have discovered any much of this. The work he and his colleagues did helped elucidate fine points in the knowledge of cell biology (he worked on the pH levels inside cells, for example). But what he HAS done is masterfully synthesize diverse findings drawn from the thousands upon thousands of scientific journal articles published over the decades. He weaves this into a coherent narrative, something no one else that I know of ever accomplished prior to Moore’s work. Before I read this book, I simply had no idea why I was suffering from hypertension. The vast majority of books, articles, and patient information pamphlets I’d read had simply said, “No one knows what causes most hypertension.” Some books advance what I believe are half-baked arguments. Many are decent books, advocating fundamentally sound high-potassium, low-sodium diets, but usually based only on empirical observations … a useful start, but not nearly as good as true science, which requires operative theories tested and ultimately winnowed down to one best theory that explains all observable data. THAT is what Moore’s book is really about. This is not just an academic distinction: by really understanding the mechanism, you can recognize that high blood pressure is merely one of a number of nasty symptoms of hypertension, and maybe not the most dangerous one. You can then set meaningful goals. So, for example, you won’t end up just robotically eating a diet dictated to you; you can instead adopt one that aims to meet specific goals while giving you more options and flexibility … keys to any kind of “lifestyle change” that you might actually hope to adopt for an entire lifetime. Finally, I notice that several other reviewers had some unkind things to say about this book. Having plowed through MOST of the recent books on this topic that you’ll find here at Amazon, I can tell you that Moore’s book truly stands alone in the quality and exhaustiveness of his citations, and the fundamental logic he brings to the topic. One reviewer seemed almost enraged because his book is not the book she wanted to buy (rather like someone rating Harry Potter with one star only because it isn’t about flying saucers). But her criticisms are largely unfair and inaccurate, in most cases suggesting she’d done no more than skim the actual book. Another reviewer claims Moore is flogging vegetarianism. But he most decidedly does NOT do that; he specifically notes that he lumps together vegans, vegetarians, and even folks who eat fish and lean meats sparingly. He makes it clear that ANY diet that gets you to a K-Factor of about 4 will mostly do the job, vegetarian or not. Another reviewer praised this book, and marveled that it hadn’t sold millions of copies. I concur. “The High Blood Pressure Solution” is a terrific and profoundly important book that can help you avoid hypertension, or defeat it if you already suffer from the malady.
Customer Review: Beware of this book’s generalities…
Moore’s assumption is of a “one size fits all”. It simply is not true that hypertension is ALWAYS caused by too much sodium (or calcium), and/or too little potassium. As someone who tends to be calcium and sodium deficient, were I to be unaware of this fact and to follow his advice, I’d soon find myself, at the least, having episodes of seizures, and, at worse, not find myself at all, having died in the throes of a stroke. Imbalances do not only go in one direction. In consulting Moore’s dietary list, I found it also interesting that the foods I cannot readily tolerate in my diet, causing ill-effects for me, are those listed as highest in potassium, which stands to reason. I was also put off by Moore’s dismissal of a genetic component in hypertension, which is certainly strongly indicated in my own family medical history. But my primary concern is that although he documents his own ideas/opinions, he fails to disclose the myriad of other studies which are at odds with those he cites. It should be noted that although his book gives a website address, it does not exist, and a Google search offers no other.

The Pleasure Principle
Using new research from the field of psychoneuroimmunolgy, Dr. Pearsall goes beyond the Spartan “no pain, no gain” philosophy to one most aptly described as “no bliss, no benefit” if you enjoy it, it’s good for you. Instead of stripping joyful activities from our lives, he encourages us to enjoy them in moderation. The key, he says, is balance. Discover how you can literally let good health “happen” to you by learning: * The purpose and use of one of your most important senses - your pleasure template. * The personal, interpersonal, transpersonal, temporal and sensual pleasure paths to health. * The difference between rational, healthy hedonism and irrational, unhealthy excess. * To laugh, love and live rather than lap, lift and lose. * The importance of touch, humor and crying. * The power of doing fun-ins instead of work-outs. The simple pleasures of daily living, those that we so often have little time for, are the real purpose and process of life. These are the pleasures we must pursue in order to improve the quality, and length of our existence. And these are at the heart of Dr. Pearsall’s humane, revisionist wisdom. The Pleasure Principle: Discovering a New Way to Health is just what the doctor ordered-it and that extra slice of pizza. So enjoy already.

Bowes & Church’s Food Values of Portions Commonly Used
…an ideal text for students of medicine, dentistry, dental hygiene, and public health nursing…the 17th edition provides current information on commonly consumed general and brand name foods.

Customer Review: Dialysis patient finds this book very useful
I’m a kidney dialysis patient and have found this book very useful. It lists key components of foods in the portion sizes that are likely to be used, rather than by the ounce or gram if those aren’t the normal portion sizes. The foods are alphabetized by type, including such things as drinks, candy and fast foods by restaurant chain, as well as the staples of everyday existence.

I can keep track of the amount of Phosphorus and Potassium, which are crucial for hemodialysis patients to monitor. Also, it lists many other minerals and vitamins, protein, a breakdown of fats, sugars, total carbs and HDL and LDL as well as total cholesterol, triglycerides, water content and other things that may factor into restricted diets for almost anyone watching almost any food components.

My only reservation is that many of the foods listed do not list the key components for me (Phosphorus and Potassium).

Customer Review: Bowes & Church’s Food Values of Portions Commonly Used
This book has good information, however, is not very useful for vegetarians or people who use frozen meals. There have been several food items that I looked up and could not find. It has more detail than the average person needs.

Customer Review: Secrets of the Sacred White Buffalo
For anyone who is interested in the use of healing herbs by Native Americans, or who is interested in herbs in general, this is the wrong book to read. It’s full of misinformation of every kind, so much so that one wonders if the author’s informants were pulling his leg. Plant misidentification, spelling errors, incorrect herbal information…it’s all there. As a herbalist, my advice is that no one should use this book as a guide!
Customer Review: Fascinating Reading!
I found this book to be fascinating reading. It contains extremely interesting information about the Native American cultures & their uses of herbs. In this day and age when so many people are turning to alternative medicine I think anyone wishing to broaden their knowledge of herbs & their uses would not be disappointed in this book. The recipe section gives great uses for herbs in the kitchen. Also, if you want to look up an ailment & find the herbal remedy for it, it’s right there. I found this to be an excellent book.

However, he still advocates you keep an MD. Then he tells you to take personal responsibility of your healthcare so you won’t need your doctor. The Diabetes Lifestyle Book: Facing Your Fears & Making Changes for a Long & Healthy Life

The Diabetes Lifestyle Book: Facing Your Fears & Making Changes for a Long & Healthy Life
This revolutionary book focuses on a two-pronged approach to diabetes management. First, it provides in-depth education about diabetes, focusing on the difficulties inherent in the self-management of the disease. This includes information about diet, exercise, medication compliance, blood glucose testing, insulin administration, as well as potential complications and how to avoid them. The book also addresses the enormous emotional and psychological component of diabetes.

Customer Review: Simply stated, every newly diagnosed diabetic should read and would substantially benefit from “The Diabetes Lifestyle Book”
Simply stated, every newly diagnosed diabetic should read and would substantially benefit from “The Diabetes Lifestyle Book” which is the collaborative work of clinical psychologist Jennifer A. Gregg (Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, San Jose State University, San Jose, California), Glenn M. Callaghan (Professor of Psychology, San Jose State University), and Steven C. Hayes (University of Nevada Foundation Professor of Psychology, University of Nevada, Reno). The life-style changes that a diabetes diagnosis compels is often daunting and very difficult to sustain until and unless the diabetics are able to face their fears, voice their concerns, and maintain the changes in their diets, activity levels, and medical services required for a long and healthy life. The psychology, the motivation, the mental management techniques that must go along with changes in diet, medication schedules, and exercise programs are fundamental and precisely the ‘how to’ information and inspiration provided by “The Diabetes Lifestyle Book”. No personal diabetes reading list or community library Health & Medicine reference collection should be without a copy of “The Diabetes Lifestyle Book”.

Customer Review: Must read for those with diabetes
This book has the potential to be a life changer for people with diabetes.

It teaches Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) principles to help people with diabetes come to grips with all the emotions involved with living with diabetes. There’s also a lot of good information about the condition itself.

I highly recommend this book. I was already familiar with ACT before I read it, but the author does a fine job of teaching some basic ACT concepts. If you’re a diabetic, please buy this book! Thank you.

The Heroin User’s Handbook
Price: $19.95
Customer Review: Brilliantly refutes our society’s demonization AND exaggeration of heroin
Francis Moraes, Ph.D is a hero in this miserable era of anti-heroin propaganda and the desecration of the American populace’s right to put what they want in their bodies. This book offers a huge slice of reality about heroin. It is probably the ONLY source of media (counting websites, films, lyrics, etc.) that does so (beyond the author’s now-defunct website). Here are a few of the many points that Dr. Moraes elucidates for the 99.99999% of the ignorant populace, smashing the hegemonic norms reified by countless forms of propaganda: 1. There ARE functional junkies. Just because John Q. Drone only hears about the ‘evil heroin-crazed murderers’ on the news (bwahahaha…crazed how? Snoring too loud?) doesn’t mean that there aren’t many professionals with their lives under control who enjoy heroin the way many Americans enjoy cigarettes. The only difference is that heroin can’t give you cancer…but can land you in a lot of legal trouble. 2. There ARE casual heroin users, just as there are casual drinkers. Heroin is an addictive drug, but so is alcohol. You don’t see our society stating that anyone who has a beer after work is a ’substance abuser’ do you? 3. The demonization of heroin is a discursive occurrence; not the pinnacle of society’s search for Good and Bad chemicals. During the 1900s, upper-class ladies had heroin habits, during Prohibition, alcohol was illegal. While the powers that be would like its pawns to believe that heroin has always been considered Evil and alcohol always society’s Drug of Choice, this is not so…nor should it ever be. 4. Heroin is NOT the smack in the head that the world believes it is. To paraphrase the book, pot users, for instance, are most disappointed with heroin’s effects, for the gentle sense of well-being and evaporation of all intense negative emotions caused by heroin is a far cry from the sensory alterations and downright wacky feelings caused by the smelly weed. In other words, a heroin user is a happier, calmer, and perhaps drowsier version of a sober individual; a pot user is a laughing idiot who may be incapable of performing certain tasks that require heavy abstract thinking and higher brain function. In addition, heroin–unlike alcohol and cocaine–makes people less violent and argumentative than they are while sober: “A society of heroin addicts may not be a more productive one, but it would be a less violent one.” 5. The author also gets it right when it comes to the downside of heroin addiction! The majority of books exaggerate the effects of heroin (”a full body orgasm–don’t even try it once, it’s so good!”) but also downplay the miseries of withdrawal (”It’s just like a mild flu”). This book is the only one I have ever read that is ACCURATE on how horrible withdrawal can be, from the severe depression to the constant vomiting to the relentless insomnia, boredom, shivering, sweating, body aches, etc. This book is incredible at showing not only how heroin is unfairly demonized, but also how the withdrawal from heroin has been unfairly downplayed. 6. Finally, the author accurately represents the political truths: “Victorian England has the homosexuals, Hitler had the Jews, and modern America has the drug users.” Or, in the last few years of marijuana acceptance, I would say that heroin users have become even more targeted. When reading the chapters on law (en)forcement and the court-enforced churchgoing that is Narcotics Anonymous (because ‘your higher power can be the doorknob’ this isn’t a violation of church and state, huh?), I kept feeling that I was talking to a friend who understood and agreed with me about the politics regarding drug use. I have never felt like this before except while talking to my partner. I am so glad that I am not alone, and that someone has written a book that has pretty much echoed my own (accurate) views on this drug. Now if only the website could be revived…or that more intellectuals who have experiences with and accurate views of opiates could get out of the closet and try to change this very messed-up ‘zero tolerance’ society. Functional junkies, intelligent heroin users, former opiate aficianados and even undermedicated pain patients all need society’s attitudes to change.
Customer Review: The perfect guide for the functioning heroin addict
Far too often disinformation couched in florid rhetoric intended to advance a moral preference couched as a universal ethic pollutes solid medical advice. Francis Moreas “Heroin: A Users Handbook” defeats myths and details real medical and chemical information and advice, often with a near clinical narrative tone. The straightforward tone is what is most welcome: neither alarmist, flinching from reality, nor governmentese, Moreas offers the Strait Dope in an informed journalistic style that never descends to a Gonzo-Hippie or Libertarian screed. This is exactly the kind of book you want for answers. On the legal side….while Moreas offers an excellent overview with welcome detail, my assessment is to remain more cautious in assuming this work covers all on the intersection of heroin use and the legal and regulatory system where the reader is located. While the Federal schedule of narcotics is well-known and easily reviewed, each state in the U.S.A. has sovereignty and distinctions in how they classify and treat various chemicals. The international legal dimensions of heroin use are far too complex for this slender volume.

The Dietary Cure for Acne

The Dietary Cure for Acne
With 174 scientific references, The Dietary Cure for Acne clearly explains the ultimate causes of acne, and details a dietary program that will begin to clear up your skin within 30 days or less. Written by internationally recognized author and researcher Loren Cordain, Ph.D., this is the only scientifically documented program that directly addresses all four known causes of acne, and the only program shown to clear acne blemishes in a human clinical trial.

In chapter four you will learn how The Dietary Cure for Acne heals your skin from the inside by preventing all four known causes of acne. You will learn how the foods you eat affect hormones called IGFBP-3 and IGF-1, and how that affects pore blockage. You will learn how the type of fat you eat can affect bacteria proliferation in your skin. And you will understand how an enzyme called ZAG, that normally works to help keep pores open, is inactivated when you eat certain common foods.

Chapter six reveals the 11 types of food to avoid, along with a clear explanation of how that particular food promotes acne. The rest of the chapter provides a specific action plan. The diet is divided into two distinct phases. In Phase 1, which lasts 30 days, you will be attacking the causes of acne with every nutritional tool that can improve acne symptoms. By closely following the diet, your acne will rapidly improve. Phase 2 covers the next 3 months and beyond.

Chapter seven is titled The Good Foods, has a sample menu and complete information on all the food that you will be eating on this program.

After reading The Dietary Cure for Acne, you will understand how the right foods can prevent the pore blockage, excess oil production, inflammation, and bacterial infection that characterize acne. But most importantly, you will learn specifically which foods to eat, and which foods to avoid, so you can take action and get results.

Fish Oil: The Natural Anti-inflammatory

Fish Oil: The Natural Anti-inflammatory
Did you know that the root cause of serious chronic diseases such as heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, arthritis, and asthma has been identified as chronic inflammation? Although numerous studies have confirmed these findings, few physcians are aware of or consider the fact that the battle against inflammation is at the forefront of the fight for health and well-being of the global population. Authors Joseph Maroon and Jeffrey Bost have set out to reverse that trend with “Fish Oil: The Natural Anti-Inflammatory.” Pharmaceujtical companies have spent billions of dollars in an attempt to understand the bio-chemistry of inflammation. Unfortunately, pharmaceutical anit-inflammatories such as Celebrex, Vioxx, and Bextra have been shown to greatly increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and uncontrollable gastric hemorrhage, with potentially fatal consequences. Is there a safer alternative? Absolutiely! The answer lies in the power of the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil, undeniably the most under-recognized and also the most petent natural anti-inflammatory available. With compelling arguments and the results of thousands of clinical studies to support them. the uathors explain in plain and simple terms; How the inflammation process works and how it can evolve into a chroninc condition that is the cause of many diseases; How fatty acids work in the body; Why supplementtion with omega-3 fatty acids can restore the body’s balance and mitigate the effects of inflmmatory factors; and why fish oil is the best source of omega-3 fatty acids, and how to identify good-quality fish oil supplements.

Customer Review: Evidence-based and from a credible source
I started reading this from the back for the practical information on dosage and purity, but I’m already impressed. It’s a pleasure to find a very recent book that lays out the science and data in a readable form. And once you’re past the rah-rah cover (which the publisher probably insisted on), the tone is very objective. I’ll be able to pass this on to a skeptical relative without it seeming like it’s selling snake oil!

This book is exactly what I was looking for. It occurs to me, though, that it may not be an easy read for someone without science or research background. It’s well written, but there’s definitely a lot of terminology to process and absorb. For someone looking for a lightweight read, maybe one of the other books on the subject would be better.

Customer Review: Excellent Insight to Curing Chronic Inflamation
I have never been motivated to write a review before on Amazon.com, but I feel compelled to for this book. I have suffered for many years with chronic neck and joint pain and recently had my second surgery in ten years. After the surgery, I received a copy of this book. It offers a new way to examine the causes of chronic arthritic pain and logically and scientifically lays out the case for adding certain types of omega 3’s to one’s diet to help lessen pain. I am not a believer generally in “alternative medicines”, but I also do not want to risk a lifetime on aspirins/ibuprofins or other “real medicines” which can have serious long term side effects as well. This book carefully details how the absence of fish from our modern diet has increased the natural inflamatory response of our bodies to the point where it is now hurting us rather than protecting us. Though thoroughly researched and well documented, this book is an easy read for the nonexpert. It also discusses omega 3 effects on other ailments such as alzheimers, cancer, depression, attention deficit disorder and others.I recommend this book specifically to anyone who has chronic arthritic or other spinal or joint related pains as well as to others who are seeking new ways of approaching other illnesses.
