Customer Review: A Splendid, Eye-Opening Book!
Richard Moore’s book, “The High Blood Pressure Solution,” is by no means perfect. The text is repetitive at times, for example. And the dietary program he recommends is sound, but sketchy; you’ll probably find yourself hunting for additional materials — low salt cook books, for example — to round it out.

Despite that, I give this book 5 stars because it may just be one of the most important books of its kind ever written, a book that could conceivably save millions of lives if recognized and adopted worldwide. And there’s every good reason why it should be: the science behind it is absolutely solid. Moore is not only a medical doctor, but ALSO a biophysicist, and this book well reflects that dual background.

A little of my own history may be instructive here. I first developed Stage I / II hypertension in the late 1990s, and did little about it. In April of 2002, I was sent to the ER with hypokalemia (low potassium). From that time until now (July, 2007), I obtained effectively NO help from any of the six doctors I consulted. My current provider is terrific in most ways, but even her help on this has been marginal. My complaint with all these people: though they proudly display their medical degrees, NONE had the slightest clue why I had developed high blood pressure. Not one could explain the hypokalemia, or how it related to my hypertension. Only one ever so much as mentioned diet, saying “You’ve cut back on salt, right? Good.” None had any better idea on treatment but to ply me with expensive drugs that inflicted unending and often brutal side effects. Only my current — and very caring — provider took the time to discuss exercise and the critical role it can play.

I finally concluded that the word “essential” in the term “essential hypertension” really means, “We don’t have a stinkin’ clue.”

And as Dr. Moore has now shown me, they were all wrong. A few medical researchers figured out long ago what causes most hypertension; an even larger number of researchers have known, for DECADES, the best course of treatment. Hint: it isn’t drugs, and it doesn’t require a super-human change in diet or lifestyle for most people. It does make demands, but as I’ve found they are not nearly so onerous as one might imagine.

Moore, who as a biophysicist spent his career investigating cellular level functions, explains in simple terms the role of sodium and potassium — the two critical electrolytes — in the life of every cell in your body. This is really just high school level science. Most people can grasp it, but it is technical. If that’s not your thing, Dr. Moore provides chapter summaries and an invitation to skip the hard science parts. I ate it up, however, because for the first time I could see what has been going wrong with my body.

And knowledge is power. In just one week, adopting only a rough outline of his recommendations, I pulled my average BP down into a very safe zone … something I’d not seen once in the previous 7 years despite all those medications. Those gains have continued, and I anticipate that in coming months I will bring it down further. The key to this is what Moore calls the K-Factor: the ratio of sodium to potassium that you consume. Americans frequently take in less potassium than sodium. Moore builds a case for aiming to reach a K-Factor of 4 (four times as much potassium as sodium each day). He also touches on other critical health issues, such as Type II diabetes … conditions that may also benefit by adopting a high K-Factor diet.

Note that the author does not claim to have discovered any much of this. The work he and his colleagues did helped elucidate fine points in the knowledge of cell biology (he worked on the pH levels inside cells, for example). But what he HAS done is masterfully synthesize diverse findings drawn from the thousands upon thousands of scientific journal articles published over the decades. He weaves this into a coherent narrative, something no one else that I know of ever accomplished prior to Moore’s work.

Before I read this book, I simply had no idea why I was suffering from hypertension. The vast majority of books, articles, and patient information pamphlets I’d read had simply said, “No one knows what causes most hypertension.” Some books advance what I believe are half-baked arguments. Many are decent books, advocating fundamentally sound high-potassium, low-sodium diets, but usually based only on empirical observations … a useful start, but not nearly as good as true science, which requires operative theories tested and ultimately winnowed down to one best theory that explains all observable data. THAT is what Moore’s book is really about.

This is not just an academic distinction: by really understanding the mechanism, you can recognize that high blood pressure is merely one of a number of nasty symptoms of hypertension, and maybe not the most dangerous one. You can then set meaningful goals. So, for example, you won’t end up just robotically eating a diet dictated to you; you can instead adopt one that aims to meet specific goals while giving you more options and flexibility … keys to any kind of “lifestyle change” that you might actually hope to adopt for an entire lifetime.

Finally, I notice that several other reviewers had some unkind things to say about this book. Having plowed through MOST of the recent books on this topic that you’ll find here at Amazon, I can tell you that Moore’s book truly stands alone in the quality and exhaustiveness of his citations, and the fundamental logic he brings to the topic. One reviewer seemed almost enraged because his book is not the book she wanted to buy (rather like someone rating Harry Potter with one star only because it isn’t about flying saucers). But her criticisms are largely unfair and inaccurate, in most cases suggesting she’d done no more than skim the actual book. Another reviewer claims Moore is flogging vegetarianism. But he most decidedly does NOT do that; he specifically notes that he lumps together vegans, vegetarians, and even folks who eat fish and lean meats sparingly. He makes it clear that ANY diet that gets you to a K-Factor of about 4 will mostly do the job, vegetarian or not.

Another reviewer praised this book, and marveled that it hadn’t sold millions of copies. I concur. “The High Blood Pressure Solution” is a terrific and profoundly important book that can help you avoid hypertension, or defeat it if you already suffer from the malady.

Customer Review: Beware of this book’s generalities…
Moore’s assumption is of a “one size fits all”. It simply is not true that hypertension is ALWAYS caused by too much sodium (or calcium), and/or too little potassium. As someone who tends to be calcium and sodium deficient, were I to be unaware of this fact and to follow his advice, I’d soon find myself, at the least, having episodes of seizures, and, at worse, not find myself at all, having died in the throes of a stroke. Imbalances do not only go in one direction. In consulting Moore’s dietary list, I found it also interesting that the foods I cannot readily tolerate in my diet, causing ill-effects for me, are those listed as highest in potassium, which stands to reason.

I was also put off by Moore’s dismissal of a genetic component in hypertension, which is certainly strongly indicated in my own family medical history. But my primary concern is that although he documents his own ideas/opinions, he fails to disclose the myriad of other studies which are at odds with those he cites.

It should be noted that although his book gives a website address, it does not exist, and a Google search offers no other.

After 3 months I was impressed by the Attend product. I read the labels on these two additional Strategy Pac products and recognized them as a great combination of homeopathic, amino acids, enzymes, B-Complexes, and such. I was really disappointed when I read this book. If you’ve read the 12 steps of compulsive overeating, then you’ve pretty much read this book. It tells you the same thing. It takes forever to get you to the place where you can create your own meal plan…and what a joke! There’s no way I can stick to something like that. I would starve too death! In conclusion, I do NOT recommend buying this book. It did not help me at all.

Customer Review: The Plan That Works
This is undoubtibly the most sane weight loss/control program ever. Once I actually read the beginning and understood the concept, it made total sense. I tried this after seeing it in Consumer’s Report as the #1 Plan where upon it is easy to loose the weight and keep it off. All that is required is to know if the calories of something (food)is lower, the same as, or higher than the actual gram weight. (Both of these are on labels of food purchased). There are tables to help you understand the concept as well as recipes and menues.
Customer Review: An eating strategy that works!
This is an eating strategy that works. But, your expectation should be to stay fit for life. Eat this way for the rest of your life. I am a male with a small frame. My normal weight in my early 20’s was about 128 to 135. I was considered too skinny. My optimal weight is 140 to 145 depending on muscle mass. This year I lost 25 pounds, from 170 to 145. In 6 months my belly fat went from 40 inches to 32 inches–that’s 8 inches! I also added muscle mass in my legs. The principles I took most to heart from this book are: –Do not get your calories from liquids. (I kept to this but could have done much better if I would have also quit coffee and daily wine consumption. –Switch to foods that are higher on the satiety index. The things that I did besides these two things as are follows: –I stepped up my exercise, little by little. Recently I started jogging. (jogging helped take off the last 5 pounds faster) –I did not count calories fully, but I became calorie conscious. I read all labels. I went to web sites. For instance, I switched to the Ruby Tuesday Veggie burger think I reduced the calorie. In reality, the veggie burger was over 800 calories without anything else. The bison burger was almost the same calories. All I was really doing is reducing fat, not calories. Educate yourself on what calories you consume. –I elimninated fast food and sodas altogether. I might eat fast food once in 4-6 weeks. –I reduced my portion size, trying to estimate calorie limits –I switched to Veggie burgers and very lean meats. Turkey sub at Subway, without the cheese, with light mayo, on wheat, and all the veggies, is incredible on the satiety index for me, and only about 400-500 calories. –I added breakfast. I never ate breakfast in my life. I mainly use yogurt. I buy all kinds of different yogurt so I do not get burned out. –I never go more than 3-4 hours without eating. This one is hard so I eat a bit of yogurt, freuit, or slim-fast protein drinks for the in-between meals. The idea is to keep the metabolism high. –I increased fruits and veggies, and other healthy foods. But I make sure that I do not overdo any one food. I try to not get redundant else I will get burned out–even on a good thing. This has to be maintainable the rest of my life. –I reduces drastically processed foods such as chips, cookies, wheat thins, and other snacks. I went to popcorn instead. –I have exceptions, but use the exceptions to make sure that my diet is not too restrictive. Too restrictive could cause me to just quit altogether. It is better to eat the chips, cookies, burgers, and fries on occasion if that is what keeps you fit for life. None of those things will cause you to sabotage the whole diet, but certainly they must become occasional, not the norm. –I never lost more than a pound or 2 a week. Big calorie deficits will slow down your metabolism. Create a small deficit, switch to foods high on satiety index, elimiate calories in drinks, and you can easily lose some initial weight. After that, it may become a struggle where you have to do many different things such as exercise or change up your food. –I could have had faster results had I adhered more attentively to the diet principles, but I just wanted progress, not overnight miracles. In all, this book can help set a eating strategy that will create the calorie deficit you need and never be hungry. Additionally, it is balanced, not too restrictive, and maintainable for life. That is the key to success. Low carb, low fat, and too low of calorie diets are not the answer for fit for life for most Americans. This book, however, must be combined with other diet principles. I do not view it as an end all, one resource book.

Customer Review: Not worth the $40 I paid
The flyer in the mail looked provocative and full of valuable information. The book cost $40. I can’t believe I ordered it. Hardcover, yes, but low quality paper and printing, no photos or color, so why the high price? The information inside was not presented in a readable or interesting manner. I haven’t tried the recipes. I have a wheat allergy and this book doesn’t have gluten-free recipes, just sugar-free. I plan to try out their claim that this book comes with a life-time guarantee and can be returned.

I was excited about reading this book. However, it’s was infuriating. I had high expectations because of the qualifications of the writers, but was severely let down. The book is contradictory. It is not clear about how you should eat, since some of the recommendations it makes seem to go against what it advises. It’s hard to read, and is not easy to follow. There is so much detail and no clear way for you to know what is right to eat without the GI book. They have now come out with a book to answer questions from this book. It’s just not a good read for someone trying to find a better way to eat. it’s hard to understand and is not enjoyable. I ended up reading this book, the Insulin resistance Diet and really liked it.

The pH Miracle for Diabetes By Robert O. Young, PhD, and Shelley Redford Young Warner Books ? 2004 All persons who are diabetic, whether Type 1 or Type 2, or pre-diabetics (”impaired fasting glucose”, meaning, BG readings from 110 - 126) like me, want to lead normal lives, eat “normal” things, be lethargic, and go about their business without regard to their BG readings. To place ourselves in such an arena, we all want a magic pill which will make us fit in with the lifestyles of 5/6th of the U.S. population. Unfortunately, no one has found such a pill, even though more and more books are written about the virtues of more and more pills, and new and improved dietary supplements. Before I review this book, I must first give you a mini-review of The Acid Alkaline Food Guide, by Dr. Susan E. Brown and Larry Trivieri, Jr., Squareone Publishers, ? 2006. This book gives a much more concise and better description of what pH balance is, how it affects your health, and the possible consequences of not keeping ones system “in balance”. pH means “potential for hydrogen”, a term used in chemistry, which indicates whether a solution, fluid or compound is acidic, alkaline, or neutral. pH can be measured in our bodies by testing saliva and urine or blood (pH strips are available for the first 2 tests), and if we have a heavy concentration of hydrogen in our systems, we are “acid based”. The scale goes from 0 to 14; to be healthy, we should have slightly alkaline, oxygen-rich arterial blood (7.365 to 7.45 is ideal) - a reading of 7.0 is neutral. Oxygen rich systems (alkaline based) neutralize formation of acids which might prove to be harmful. To help us stay in the neutral zone, our bodies use calcium and protein from bones, and possibly other places, to pump more alkaline to our systems in order to neutralize formation of acids, so as to keep us in balance. After the passage of time, if we fail to keep our systems in balance, and we become acid based, our bone formation will be reduced, calcium will be lost in our urine (leading to kidney stone formation), proteins will breakdown causing our muscles to waste away, our systems will be unable to repair cells, tissues and organs fully, our systems will age at an accelerated pace, more free radicals will be produced, we will be subject to increased fluid retention, and so forth. The American diet is centered around foods that create acid-base systems. Dr. Brown lists about 70 pages of foods we eat, and rates them according to whether the food is alkaline-forming or acid-forming. The first time I read through the list, I determined that I could not eat any food without running the risk of forming more acids in my system. To remedy this, Dr. Young would have me become a vegetarian, but Dr. Brown has an easier solution: eat more dark green vegetables than any other food group. She doesn’t require me to give up meat or eggs or nuts, so long as 2/3rd of my plate contains foods that are alkaline-forming (such as kale, collard greens, asparagus, snap green beans, etc.). Dr. Brown explains the basis for her conclusions. Our bodies have 3 methods of getting rid of unwanted “poisons”, or acid forming chemicals, all of which are filtered through our bodies: First, our lungs supply our bodies with much needed oxygen (as we breathe in), and dispel (exhale) carbon dioxide (the “burned” waste from our system - an inference might be made that aerobic exercise helps cleanse our system, because it requires lots of heavy breathing, which gives us a double dose of oxygen; in turn the CO2 expels the oxidized stuff we don’t need); Second, our kidneys filter unwanted sugars, and other waste products which we don’t need (we rid our systems through urine - a preventative measure we can take is to drink lots of pure, and hopefully ionized or ozone rich water, which will keep our kidneys healthy, as well as supply needed oxygen to our systems); and Third, our skin filters out other things, through our perspiration (which is also produced through exercise). With this background in mind, we can have a better understanding of what Dr. Young advocates in his book. He noticed the correlation between acid based systems and diabetes, and concluded that if our systems are neutral, or slightly alkaline, our blood sugars would be “normal”. As I have been checking my pH balance every morning, which I do before checking my BG reading, I can generally predict what my BG readings will be. If my system measures 7.0, which is neutral, my BG readings are pretty good (98 to 107). If my pH balance is 6.5, my BG readings will be higher (113, 114). Although Dr. Young’s book does not explain the chemistry involved in the process, he nonetheless makes a very persuasive argument that by eating lots of green vegetables, and drinking pure water mixed with green powder (the “green drink”), diabetics can improve their BG readings. Throughout the book, there are very interesting testimonials, given by both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics; all of them reported a marked improvement in their BG readings - once they began drinking green drinks, stopped drinking carbonated beverages, and changing their eating habits. The “green drink” is simply a mixture of oxygenated water (which can be produced with an ozone machine, or by adding sodium chlorite drops to pure water) and a teaspoon of green drink powder (which is nothing more than powdered, ground vegetables). I usually have two drinks a day, instead of an extra cup of coffee in the morning and a Diet Coke in the afternoon (which I have now given up). Dr. Young also requires us to exercise. He prefers aerobic exercise to anaerobic exercise. I have no quarrel with his observations, especially since I have a better understanding of the benefits of having more oxygen pumped through my lungs. Oxidation is a good thing as far as I am concerned, because it neutralizes unwanted hydrogen ions and other viruses. As a side note, I have switched from the treadmill to an elliptical trainer, which gives me a better, complete body workout in less time. Half of Dr. Young’s book consists of recipes, which are all vegetarian in nature. We have not tried any of them, for a number of reasons. First, Dr. Young assumes that food budgets are unlimited, even for those of us who do not live in California. Thus, we cannot eat avocados three or four times a day. Second, the ingredients used in the recipes (even by California standards) are very expensive. As I am writing this review, I can report that my pH readings do bear some correlation with my BG readings. When my pH is 6.5, my BG readings are a bit higher than when my pH is 7.0 or higher. Because of the changed variables (new exercise regimen, taking 2 green drinks a day, watching my intake of fatty foods, eating more green vegetables), I cannot isolate one component as causing the improvement in my BG readings. It would be wonderful to learn that an adjustment to our diets could rid us of the need for insulin, metformin, Avandia, and other such drugs. None of the books I have reviewed suggest that we remain idle - all of the authors want us to exercise regularly (which may turn out to be the most important component of all - a recent report indicated that the best preventative for Alzheimer’s Disease was to do 3 hours of aerobic exercise a week - oxygen is needed in your brain, you know). Dr. Young’s book is worth owning. Before you purchase this recommended book, I suggest that you consider reading other resources on ph balances.

The book, greatest purchase that you can have. It has helped out in the balance of food that can be eaten, it’s simple to follow and it even stastes good. I have always had a problem with what to cook for myself, that is the toughest part about a diabetic. With this book you are watching the sugar intake, the acid intake and more. I do wish there were more recipes to choose from that are just as good as these. I want to thank Dr. Young and his wife for doing all the research and providing everyone with facts. ok, first off, im not dissing the system. im a big believer in the acid/alkaline balance and its relation to health. my beef with this book, is that besides being terribly organized(charts are redundant, and no actual ph numbers are given), theres some information thats actually incorrect: every other book ive read and chart ive looked at has listed figs as one of the most alkaline foods out there, yet the authors list it in the acid catagory. as well, millet, which is generally considdered the only alkaline grain, they have listed once again in the acid catagory. i just got the book the other day, and i really havent had a chance to go thru it very thoroughly, but if a basic perusal turns up these two glaring errors, it makes me not trust any of the information contained within. i guess ill just have to stick to cross referencing websites, and make my own chart…

It was fascinating. I am a 16 yr survivor of breast cancer and I read a lot about nutrition and healthful living, but this is the first time I’ve read about pH balance. It was very informative and I liked the index where you could look up foods to see how they effected the pH balance of your body. Customer Review: Moving past my plateu!!
At age 20, I had already been through 3 surgeries due to bowel obstructions and Crohn’s Disease (chronic inflammation of the intestinal lining). Suffering with the disease kept me fairly slim through out my 20’s, but completely inactive. My well known “coke bottle shape” has always looked fine in clothes but, over the years I have lost A LOT of muscle tone and definition. At 30 I had my son, and thankfully, my Crohn’s Disease took a dive…but as a result my weight shot up. I only gained 12 lbs. during my pregnancy with my son, but after having him, I found it difficult to control the amount of food I was eating. 4 years later, I found myself at an all time high of 206 lbs. I went on a reduced carb-calorie counting diet and lost 27 lbs, but was still unhappy with the way my body looked …and I was at a plateau. Even with my 1300-1400 calorie a day diet (I’m 5′7″), and briskly walking 3-4 times a day for 15 min, I couldn’t get anymore weight off. I searched the web for a solution. I came to the realization that I needed to rebuild my muscles to boost my metabolism and reclaim my body shape… without the fat and cellulite. I stumbled across Dr. Vedral’s book while looking for a weight-training program that wouldn’t impact the already limited time in my day and would cut out going to the gym (I hate the gym!). After two weeks of continuing my own diet, following her exercises and cutting my wallks down to 2 a day, I have lost 4.5 lbs! Her program is direct and well spelled out. I wake up a few minutes earlier in the morning to complete the exercises. It does take me a little more than 12 min a day, simply because I find that I need to do some stretching before and after, which she doesn’t really require in this program. My only gripe would be that some of the pictured illustrations are more “cutesy” posed, than the true form that you need to start at, but the written word for the start position clarifies it for you. All and all, I couldn’t be a happier. I can FEEL it working and feel confident that within a few weeks I will SEE results of more muscle tone and definition. All of my muscles have a “good” soreness they haven’t felt in years and it feels great!! Because of the light weights and basic movements I think 12 Minute Total Body Workout is a great book for those who are desiring to boost your personal fitness program, no matter were you’re starting point is. Thanks, Dr. Vedral!! I love this book!!
Customer Review: Narcissistic, simplistic, and shallow
Though this book was published in 1989, its substance was recycled in other forms, spreading the same confusing message. The author is unsettled on the duration of daily workout from 12 minutes, 15 minutes, and then 20 minutes. In this book, the author proposes 7 days a week of weight training. In others, she proposes working out twice a week. She talks about “total body building”, “supercuts”, and “fat burning” without having the slightest clue on the basic physical facts about their scientific origin. Here are some absurd errors you will find in this book: 1) The book claims the “you can shape up in no time if you do not have time to shape up” which is a lie. 2) Page 32, “the trapezius muscle is labeled as the latissimus dorsi. Then on Page 112-113, she describes “shoulder press with dumbbells” as “lateral pulldown” and claims to workout the latissimus dorsii. Thus, she confuses pulling for pushing. Though the book is introduced by a medical doctor (Jude T. Barbea) and written by an author with Ph.D. in English literature, the book completely misrepresents basic weight training teaching. 3) Page 139, “Eggs help raise beneficial HDL, break up cholesterol deposits and carry them away from blood vessels”. So, how many eggs do you need to completely get rid of atherosclerosis????? 4) Page 139, “fibers help eliminate 10% of fat intake since they (fibers) pass through unregistered”. She does not know how the fat is digested in the intestine and assumes that fat elimination is simply “sliding through” with fibers. Weight Training Made Easy: Transform Your Body in Four Simple Steps When I browsed through similar books that claim to achieve magic fitness results in about 15 minutes or so, I stumbled on a general trend. Whether the author is a man or a woman, those books clearly show narcissistic authors, with simplistic views who claim to lead the world to perfection. All share fond of their bodily outlook, neurotic, and impatient in acquiring knowledge, or adapting to new trends in modern exercise teaching. The simplest rule of staying fit is “simple counting of Calories”. One Calorie per minute worth of work will amount to 60 calories per hour and 1440 Calories per day. If you try to condense that in 15 or 20 minutes, you will need to expend energy at a rate of 72 Calories per minute, which is impossible even by swimming in cold water or cycling at top speed.

I started reading this from the back for the practical information on dosage and purity, but I’m already impressed. It’s a pleasure to find a very recent book that lays out the science and data in a readable form. And once you’re past the rah-rah cover (which the publisher probably insisted on), the tone is very objective. I’ll be able to pass this on to a skeptical relative without it seeming like it’s selling snake oil! This book is exactly what I was looking for. It occurs to me, though, that it may not be an easy read for someone without science or research background. It’s well written, but there’s definitely a lot of terminology to process and absorb. For someone looking for a lightweight read, maybe one of the other books on the subject would be better.
Customer Review: Excellent Insight to Curing Chronic Inflamation
I have never been motivated to write a review before on Amazon.com, but I feel compelled to for this book. I have suffered for many years with chronic neck and joint pain and recently had my second surgery in ten years. After the surgery, I received a copy of this book. It offers a new way to examine the causes of chronic arthritic pain and logically and scientifically lays out the case for adding certain types of omega 3’s to one’s diet to help lessen pain. I am not a believer generally in “alternative medicines”, but I also do not want to risk a lifetime on aspirins/ibuprofins or other “real medicines” which can have serious long term side effects as well. This book carefully details how the absence of fish from our modern diet has increased the natural inflamatory response of our bodies to the point where it is now hurting us rather than protecting us. Though thoroughly researched and well documented, this book is an easy read for the nonexpert. It also discusses omega 3 effects on other ailments such as alzheimers, cancer, depression, attention deficit disorder and others.I recommend this book specifically to anyone who has chronic arthritic or other spinal or joint related pains as well as to others who are seeking new ways of approaching other illnesses.
